Historic Whalen & Kastner Garage Revitalized in Great Barrington
The historic Whalen & Kastner Garage in Great Barrington has undergone a significant transformation following its purchase in 2022 by the Alander Group. Originally designed by prominent architect Joseph McArthur Vance and completed in 1924, the building has a rich history that reflects the evolution of automotive service in the area.
Located on Main Street, the garage was established by owners M. Curtin Whalen and Edward “Skippy” Kastner. For decades, it served as a Ford dealership and later expanded to include an auto body shop. Over the years, the dealership was rebranded as Mahaiwe Motors, a name that became synonymous with automotive sales in Great Barrington.
In the 1960s, the dealership came under the leadership of renowned car salesman Bill Whittaker. Following this period, the building transitioned to serve educational purposes, housing the South County campus of Berkshire Community College for several years.
Restoration and Modern Use
The Alander Group, led by Ian Rasch and Roman Montano, purchased the property with the intent to restore its architectural character while adapting it for modern use. The renovation revealed stunning original features, including three large white glass tiles inlaid with stained glass that display the names of the original owners and the inscription “The W. K. Garage.”
The meticulous restoration process not only preserved the historical significance of the structure but also repurposed it to accommodate both commercial and residential spaces. Today, the Whalen & Kastner Garage serves as the new home for the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, providing a vibrant hub for local businesses and community engagement.
A Glimpse into the Past
Photographs from various eras showcase the building’s rich history. Images of the Mahaiwe Motors crew from the 1950s highlight the expertise of automotive repair professionals, including notable figures like Jerry Jones Sr. In the 1960s, promotional materials featured the latest Ford models under Whittaker’s ownership, capturing a time when the dealership thrived.
The transition to educational use is documented in a 2015 photograph of the Berkshire Community College campus, which illustrates how the building adapted to changing community needs.
The restoration of the Whalen & Kastner Garage not only honors its historical legacy but also revitalizes a crucial part of Great Barrington’s architectural heritage. As it stands today, the building serves as a bridge between the past and the future, fostering local business and community connection in a restored, vibrant environment.
