Meet Wendy Fay: The Resilient Face of Price Chopper in Otis
Wendy Fay, a familiar face at the Great Barrington Price Chopper, has become known for her calm demeanor and ability to manage challenging situations with ease. Since relocating to Berkshire County in 2002, she has built a reputation not only for her customer service skills but also for her remarkable life experiences, including her time in the military.
Born in Milford, Connecticut, Fay moved to Cheshire at the age of 11. After graduating from Cheshire High School in 1978, she pursued a degree in forestry. Despite her aspirations, she ultimately opted to begin her career instead of continuing her education. Fay broke barriers early on when she became the first female member of a tree crew in Cheshire, demonstrating her ability to thrive in a male-dominated industry.
Fay’s journey into the military began later in life. After starting her own cleaning service, she decided to join the Navy in the 1980s, seeking opportunities for travel and adventure. She was stationed in Hawaii, where she met her husband, Brian Wegner. Fay graduated as a Seabee, specializing in construction work, and was part of a small cohort of women in her field, which was predominantly male.
During her service, Fay was deployed to various locations, including the East Coast and Greece, where she spent 15 months at Souda Bay, a naval support base in the Mediterranean. Reflecting on her time in the Navy, she emphasizes the invaluable experiences gained through exposure to diverse cultures and people, stating that it enriched her understanding of the world.
After leaving the Navy, Fay returned to Connecticut and bought a house in Cheshire. The couple eventually moved to Otis to care for Fay’s aging parents, who had retired to the area. This move allowed her to maintain family connections while continuing her career in retail.
At Price Chopper, Fay thrives on interacting with customers from all walks of life. She appreciates the variety of individuals she meets daily, especially as the store attracts visitors from across the region. Despite the occasional difficult customer, Fay remains composed and focuses on providing excellent service.
In her free time, Fay enjoys gardening and exploring the scenic landscapes of the Berkshires and beyond, often riding her motorcycle on the area’s beautiful roads.
As our conversation concluded, a customer inquired about maps, prompting Fay to humorously inform them that they had not been available for years. Her approachable nature and quick wit truly exemplify the spirit of community service that defines her role at Price Chopper.
Wendy Fay’s journey from a military service member to a beloved retail employee showcases resilience and dedication. Her story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of adaptability and the value of personal connections in any community.
