Montenegro Summons Russian Ambassador Over Controversial Statements

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro summoned the Russian Ambassador, Aleksander Lukašik, for discussions on November 17, 2025, in response to inappropriate statements and comments made in the media. Officials from the ministry described these remarks as a clear example of unacceptable interference in Montenegro’s internal affairs.

The summons was prompted by remarks made by the Russian ambassador following the Assembly of Montenegro’s decision to join NATO’s security assistance and training mechanism for Ukraine (NSATU). Lukašik’s subsequent negative commentary about an interview given by the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović, to the French newspaper La Croix, was deemed particularly concerning by Montenegrin officials.

According to the Ministry, such actions and criticisms from the ambassador are completely unacceptable. The ministry emphasized that Montenegro would not tolerate any threats to the dignity of its institutions. It was made clear to the Russian ambassador that any similar messages in the future would be regarded as deliberate hostile actions, which would prompt appropriate responses in accordance with international norms.

Montenegro’s officials reiterated that they expect full respect for their institutions and officials from the Russian Embassy. They clarified that Montenegro conducts its foreign policy independently, adhering to its national and strategic interests, which are defined by its foreign policy priorities, including NATO membership and commitment to the EU accession process.

This diplomatic engagement underscores Montenegro’s stance on maintaining its sovereignty and addressing external pressures in a manner consistent with its national interests.
