St James Tennis Club Celebrates Coach’s Legacy and Launches Fundraiser
St James Tennis Club recently held a heartfelt farewell for Paul Scrivener, who is stepping down after 15 years as a coach to travel the world. The event, themed around the US Open, allowed club members to celebrate his contributions while also launching a fundraiser aimed at repairing the club’s fencing and frontage, which has faced ongoing issues due to vandalism and wear.
The club, located on Hereford Avenue, has been a vital community asset, providing a welcoming space for tennis enthusiasts of all ages. Ria McKeon, a committee member, emphasized the club’s vibrant atmosphere, noting that many outsiders perceive it as derelict. “They think it’s derelict land and don’t realize how vibrant, beautiful, and lovely it is,” she explained.
Despite being at the end of the season, the club continues to offer training throughout the year, embodying its motto: “If it’s raining, it’s still training.” McKeon highlighted the club’s commitment to involving the local community, particularly the youth. “We want everyone to know we are here and we have a great family feeling,” she said, urging local residents to engage with the club rather than resorting to vandalism.
St James Tennis Club offers affordable membership options to encourage participation. Membership fees are set at £5 for children under five, £40 for those under eight, and £65 for juniors up to age 18. Adult membership costs £130 annually, with funds directed toward maintaining and improving the club facilities.
Member Ellie Watkinson spoke about the club’s significance, recalling its long history since the 1920s. “We do a fun day to coincide with the four major tournaments in tennis, including Wimbledon and the US Open,” she said. The club has made some improvements, such as replacing nets and scoreboards, but the fencing remains a pressing issue due to damage from vandalism.
Many families, including Helen Spauls and her children, have found a sense of community and development through the club. Her son, Josh, and daughter, Isabella, have made friends and improved their skills through the club’s programs. “It’s great to come down and all play together,” Spauls remarked, highlighting the supportive environment provided by the club.
As the farewell event unfolded, coach Paul Scrivener reflected on his journey with the club. “I started just to play and learn the sport but soon became really passionate about it,” he said. He completed his coaching qualifications and built what he describes as a family within the club. “I’m definitely going to miss it; it’s been a hard decision to leave,” he shared, expressing excitement for his upcoming adventures while wishing success for the club he has nurtured.
The Club’s Committee expressed their gratitude for Scrivener’s dedication, stating, “After 15 incredible years, we bid a fond farewell to Coach Paul. He has inspired hundreds of players of all ages and abilities.” They emphasized his significant role in shaping the coaching program and fostering a love for the sport among members.
The fundraiser launched at the farewell event aims to address the urgent need for repairs to the club’s fencing and frontage. McKeon stressed that while the club keeps membership fees low to ensure accessibility, the financial burden of repairs has become a challenge. “We would love any help with our fencing or any partners to get involved with us,” she said, reinforcing the club’s commitment to its community.
As St James Tennis Club moves forward, it continues to strive for a safe and welcoming environment for all. Coach Paul Scrivener’s legacy will undoubtedly influence future generations, and the club remains dedicated to fostering a love for tennis among its members.
