Severe weather caused by Storm Emi has left hundreds of thousands of households in Ireland without electricity. The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) and the Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) network have warned that it may take several days for power to be fully restored. At the height of the storm, around 65,000 homes were affected, a number that has since decreased to approximately 49,000 households still without power as of midday on October 4, 2025.

The storm has wreaked havoc across the region, leading to fallen trees, damaged vehicles, and roofs being torn off buildings. Wind gusts reached a dangerous 90 mph, severely disrupting daily life. Tragically, police confirmed that a man in his forties lost his life in Donegal during the storm’s onslaught.

Widespread Disruption and Safety Alerts

The impact of Storm Emi has extended beyond power outages. Flooding has been reported, and multiple roads have been obstructed, prompting traffic disruptions and necessitating the closure of schools. Due to the severity of the situation, the police issued a highest-level red warning, advising residents to remain in shelters until conditions improve.

Meteorologists predict that the worst of Storm Emi will pass by tomorrow, with expectations that it will move towards Scandinavia. This storm marks the first named storm of the season, with subsequent storms set to be named Bram, Chandra, and Dave.

As the recovery efforts begin, both the ESB and NIE are mobilizing resources to restore electricity and assist those affected. The situation remains dynamic, with authorities closely monitoring the weather conditions and updating the public on safety measures and power restoration timelines.
