Tommy Coyle and Neil Hudgell have been awarded the esteemed Freedom of the City of Kingston upon Hull. The honour was conferred upon them during a ceremony held at Hull’s Guildhall on November 20, 2023, marking a significant recognition of their contributions to the community. Both men were nominated for this honour earlier in the year by Labour councillors and received swift approval from the Hull City Council.

During the ceremony, Lord Mayor Cllr Cheryl Payne praised their commitment to the community, stating, “They’ve both given back so much to the communities that made them.”

Tommy Coyle: From Boxing Ring to Community Advocate

Former professional boxer Tommy Coyle transitioned from a successful career in sports to impactful community work. His nomination came from Cllr Shane McMurray, who delivered a heartfelt speech highlighting Coyle’s deep roots in Hull. Cllr McMurray remarked, “Tommy’s story is one rooted in Hull, built on hard work, humility, and heart.”

Coyle grew up in a family connected to the historic fruit market of the city, instilling in him the values of discipline and community. Cllr McMurray noted how Coyle’s dedication continued beyond his boxing career. “While many athletes drift into the background, Tommy stepped even further into the heart of his community,” he said. Coyle has established gyms and youth projects aimed at providing safe and positive environments for young people.

Cllr Mike Ross, the leader of Hull City Council, called the award “a very fitting recognition” for Coyle, asserting that his work in the city is far from over. “I think we are very much at the start and there’s going to be more chapters with Tommy making a difference in our city,” he added.

Upon receiving the award, Coyle expressed his gratitude, stating, “It’s a tremendous honour to receive such an award and we’ve got some great plans for the city that I’m really proud to be from.”

Neil Hudgell: A Legacy of Support and Justice

Alongside Coyle, Neil Hudgell, a solicitor, philanthropist, and owner of Hull KR, was also honoured. Nominated by Cllr Daren Hale, Hudgell has played a pivotal role in the success of the East Hull rugby club, particularly during their victorious 2025 Treble-winning season. Cllr Hale commended Hudgell for the extensive work he has put into the club and the community, stating, “Neil also deserves this for his incredible contribution.”

Beyond his contributions to rugby, Hudgell is the Executive Chairman of Hudgell Solicitors. His legal practice has included significant cases, such as representing victims of the Post Office Horizon scandal. Cllr Hale praised Hudgell’s commitment to ensuring justice, noting, “Outrageously, access to the law in this country often depends on the size of your wallet, but the good thing about Neil and the firm he runs is that it has enabled people to get justice.”

During the ceremony, Dr. Hudgell expressed his gratitude to the council for their ongoing support of Hull KR over the years. He acknowledged both current and previous administrations for their contributions to the club and the community.

With this recognition, both Tommy Coyle and Neil Hudgell solidify their legacies as dedicated figures in Hull, continuing to inspire and uplift their community through various initiatives and support. Their awards serve as a reminder of the profound impact individuals can have in fostering positive change.
