Transform Your Slippery Decking with This £1 Shaving Foam Hack
A surprising solution for slippery garden decking has emerged, thanks to a simple £1 item: shaving foam. Expert Sophie Willoughby, a volunteer with the Royal Horticultural Society, tested this method after encountering slick steps in her own garden. Her results were impressive, leading her to recommend it to homeowners dealing with algae buildup.
Decking can quickly become hazardous when algae accumulates, particularly in damp conditions. While many assume that high-pressure washing is the only way to tackle the problem, Willoughby found that shaving foam offered a more effective and less labor-intensive alternative.
Shaving Foam: An Unexpected Solution
According to experts at Decking Superstore, the thick consistency of shaving foam allows it to adhere to surfaces rather than running off like water. This characteristic enables the foam to actively break down algae, making it easier to clean. Unlike harsh chemical cleaners, shaving foam is a gentler option that is safer for children and pets.
Willoughby’s initial skepticism about the method quickly vanished after she saw the results. “I thought it was one of those silly hacks that wouldn’t actually work,” she confessed. “But I was shocked. I left it for about ten minutes, gave it a light scrub, and the algae just lifted off. I’ve used expensive deck cleaner before, and this worked better — plus it smelled nicer.”
The process is straightforward. Homeowners can apply shaving foam generously to the affected areas, allowing it to sit for approximately ten minutes before lightly scrubbing. This method not only saves money but also reduces the effort typically associated with cleaning algae-covered decking.
Understanding Algae Growth in Decking
Algae thrives in moist environments, particularly in shaded areas with poor air circulation. Despite the warm and dry summer experienced in the UK, the weather can still be quite damp, creating ideal conditions for algae to flourish. Homeowners are likely to find algae in corners or other areas that do not receive direct sunlight.
The simple act of cleaning with shaving foam can significantly improve the safety and appearance of outdoor spaces. With the ease and affordability of this method, it is no wonder that Willoughby now swears by it.
As people seek effective ways to maintain their gardens, this innovative approach to cleaning decking deserves attention. By utilizing a common household item, homeowners can achieve remarkable results without the need for expensive products or professional services.
