First Minister John Swinney has announced that discussions regarding increased autonomy for the Shetland Islands Council are intensifying. Speaking at the start of a two-day visit to Shetland, he emphasized the need for the Scottish Government to address what he termed a “fundamental injustice.” This statement comes as residents of Shetland face some of the highest energy bills in the UK while hosting significant renewable energy developments, such as the Viking windfarm.

During his trip, which includes a visit to the community-led Garth windfarm in Yell, Swinney highlighted ongoing pilot initiatives. These initiatives aim to assess a proposal by SNP candidate Hannah Mary Goodlad, who is accompanying him, to create a local quota of cabins for Shetlanders on NorthLink ferries during peak travel times. Swinney described the idea as a “very good plan” and commended Goodlad’s vision for the future of Shetland if she is elected as a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP).

Additionally, Swinney reiterated the Scottish Government’s commitment to financially support the Shetland Islands Council in its exploration of potential fixed links. This includes both tunnels and new inter-island ferries, which would enhance connectivity within the region. He noted that discussions with Orkney and the Western Isles councils are ongoing, focusing on granting these areas greater autonomy in local decision-making processes.

Swinney’s itinerary also includes visits to various local facilities, such as a nursery, the Lerwick Port Authority, and UHI Scalloway, as well as a local crofting business. Tonight, he is scheduled to participate in a public discussion event at the museum in Lerwick, hosted by Goodlad. This engagement aims to foster dialogue about the future of the islands and the role of local governance.

As discussions continue, the outcome may significantly impact the governance and economic future of the Shetland Islands, reflecting a growing desire among residents for more control over local matters. More developments are expected to emerge from this visit and the ongoing negotiations.
