Hundreds of Women Report Sexual Abuse During UK Army Medicals
Hundreds of women have come forward with allegations of sexual abuse occurring during British Army medical examinations spanning five decades. Wiltshire Police are currently investigating these claims, which involve various military locations across the United Kingdom. The investigation, initiated earlier this year, focuses on incidents reported between the 1970s and 2016.
The police have not disclosed the exact number of allegations received, but a reliable source indicated that hundreds of women have already reported their experiences. Wiltshire Police confirmed that they are engaging with individuals affected by the alleged abuse and are actively seeking out others who may have concerns or information to share.
Details of the Investigation
The inquiry, codenamed Operation Pianora, is supported by the Hampshire-based Defence Serious Crime Command and the Ministry of Defence (MoD). According to Wiltshire Police, the investigation aims to identify points of contact within various police forces across the UK.
Detective Superintendent Darren Hannant, who is leading the investigation, stated, “Our enquiries to date have revealed offending spanning several decades at various locations in the UK, indicating different perpetrators.” He mentioned that they are actively pursuing multiple lines of inquiry but have yet to identify any suspects. Detectives are appealing to anyone who may have experienced “criminal, inappropriate or unusual behaviour” during army enlistment medical examinations to come forward and share their experiences.
Official Responses
In light of these serious allegations, Defence Minister Luke Pollard expressed his admiration for the bravery of those who have come forward, calling their experiences “painful and appalling.” He assured that the MoD service police are collaborating closely with Wiltshire Police to ensure thorough investigations into any claims that do not meet the expected standards of conduct.
Minister for Veterans Louise Sandher-Jones also addressed alleged victims directly, stating, “I will stand with you every step of the way in your fight for justice.” She emphasized that all individuals who choose to serve the country deserve to do so without the threat of abuse and with the dignity they warrant.
Furthermore, Lt Gen David Eastman, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, declared that “there is absolutely no place in the British Army for sexual abuse and misconduct.” He reiterated the army’s commitment to supporting the ongoing investigation and encouraged anyone with relevant information to contact Wiltshire Police.
The ongoing investigation has sparked significant concern within the military community and has highlighted the need for a thorough examination of the treatment of recruits during their initial experiences in military life. Wiltshire Police have made a dedicated effort to ensure survivors receive appropriate support and are working diligently to uncover the full extent of the allegations.
Individuals who believe they may have experienced any form of misconduct during enlistment medical examinations are urged to reach out to Wiltshire Police through their official website. The investigation remains in its early stages, and further updates are expected as more information comes to light.
