PDP Names Tanimu Turaki as Consensus Chairman in Democratic Move

In a significant development within Nigeria’s political landscape, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has selected former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), as its consensus candidate for national chairman. This decision, announced by Inna Ciroma, a member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), reflects what she describes as a democratic process that aligns with the will of the majority of Northern stakeholders.

During an interview with ARISE News on Thursday, Ciroma elaborated on the party’s internal zoning principles, which dictate that leadership roles rotate between the Northern and Southern regions every four years. With the presidency currently designated for the South, she noted that the chairmanship must revert to the North. “PDP zones positions and rotates them every four years between the North and the South,” she stated, emphasizing the longstanding traditions that guide the party’s leadership structure.

The decision to endorse Turaki followed extensive consultations among Northern leaders. Ciroma explained that micro-zoning efforts took place among the Northern subregions, leading to an agreement that the chairmanship would shift from the North East to the North West. “There were arguments about the North Central not exhausting its four years, but we resolved that the North West has never produced a PDP national chairman,” she added, indicating a consensus among various factions within the party.

Ciroma acknowledged that while the decision may not satisfy everyone, it reflects democratic principles at work. “PDP is a democratic party. When they met and endorsed Tanimu Turaki, that was democracy. Others who are unhappy have the right to complain, but the majority decision stands,” she stated, reinforcing the party’s commitment to democratic processes.

She also addressed speculation regarding a potential link between Turaki’s endorsement and the possible return of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 elections. Ciroma dismissed these claims, asserting that the current focus is on rebuilding the party. “As far as I’m concerned, PDP has serious challenges, and we need a chairman who can provide a strong platform for whoever becomes our presidential candidate,” she said, emphasizing Turaki’s qualifications and leadership style.

Describing Turaki as experienced, humble, and democratic, Ciroma expressed confidence in his ability to lead the PDP effectively. “He listens to everyone and thinks about the country. We need leaders with vision, not just those who want to be president for power’s sake,” she remarked.

Addressing concerns about internal crises and membership losses, Ciroma maintained that the PDP remains resilient. “Honestly, I’m not worried about governors leaving. In 2015, PDP had more governors and still lost the election,” she explained, suggesting that election outcomes depend more on the electorate than on party leadership. “Every Nigerian’s vote matters. Your vote is your right and your rescue from the present situation,” she added.

Looking ahead, Ciroma expressed optimism that the PDP would not only retain existing members but also attract former members back as it prepares for the 2027 elections. “People will go and come back. PDP has never changed its name or merged with any party. We are still here, united and wiser,” she concluded. With Turaki at the helm, she is confident that the PDP will stabilize, strengthen its internal democracy, and reaffirm its position as Nigeria’s main opposition party.
