“Wicked: For Good” Takes a Dark Turn in New Sequel
The much-anticipated sequel, “Wicked: For Good,” shifts the narrative into darker territory, focusing on themes of oppression and moral complexity. Following the events of the original “Wicked,” this installment opens with Elphaba, now the Wicked Witch of the West, flying in to liberate animal laborers exploited by the Wizard’s regime. The film, directed by Jon M. Chu, challenges audiences with its portrayal of a society grappling with authoritarianism and animal rights.
Set one year after the first film’s conclusion, “Wicked: For Good” introduces new dynamics among familiar characters. Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, has become the face of the Wizard’s propaganda campaign, while Fiyero, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, serves as a captain in the Wizard’s Guard. Elphaba, on the other hand, is branded an enemy of the state. The film uses flashbacks to illustrate the deep bond that once existed between these characters, emphasizing how their public personas have now driven them apart.
The tonal shift from the first film is noticeable, with moments of levity becoming sparse. Grande’s portrayal of Glinda, while showcasing her comedic talent, is often overshadowed by the film’s heavier themes. Despite this, Chu manages to weave a compelling narrative that maintains emotional momentum throughout.
The sequel explores the moral ambiguities of its characters, presenting a world where no one is purely good or evil. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that the characters’ descent into wickedness occurs when they cease to strive for a better world. This nuanced storytelling offers a refreshing complexity often absent in large-scale blockbusters.
In addition to “Wicked: For Good,” The Triplex is showcasing several other films. Among these is “Nuremberg,” a historical drama featuring Rami Malek as a U.S. Army psychiatrist confronting Russell Crowe‘s portrayal of Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring. The film delves into the psychological and ethical challenges faced by those seeking justice in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
Another exciting offering is “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” where the original cast returns for a high-stakes heist involving the world’s largest diamond. The film promises a blend of intrigue and magic, characteristic of its predecessors.
For trivia enthusiasts, The Triplex will host a movie trivia night on November 25, 2025, at 20:30. Participants can win free tickets while enjoying a fun evening of multimedia movie questions.
Upcoming films include “Sentimental Value,” directed by Joachim Trier, and “Zootopia 2,” both set to premiere shortly. The former features a complex family dynamic involving a father and his estranged daughters, while the latter follows Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as they tackle new challenges in Zootopia.
As “Wicked: For Good” unfolds, it promises to captivate audiences with its bold storytelling and emotional depth, marking a significant chapter in the saga of Oz.
