Rangers Aim to Challenge Celtic Dominance Under New Leadership

Former Rangers defender Colin Hendry has expressed concern over the current dominance of Celtic FC in Scottish football. He believes the players within the Ibrox dressing room are “fed up” with watching their rivals secure silverware season after season. Hendry emphasized that the new ownership group, 49ers Enterprises, understands that the primary objective of head coach Russell Martin is to dethrone Celtic, rather than focusing solely on upcoming European competitions.
Reflecting on his previous interactions with Martin during the latter’s tenure at MK Dons in 2021, Hendry noted that he was impressed by Martin’s youthfulness, enthusiasm, and honesty. Although a transfer for Hendry’s son, Callum, to MK Dons did not materialize, Hendry has remained invested in Martin’s career trajectory and is pleased to see him at the helm of Rangers.
Hendry is adamant that while progressing in the Champions League against Panathinaikos will be significant, the true measure of success for Martin and the club lies in the Scottish Premiership. “Winning the league is what truly matters,” Hendry stated, highlighting that the previous season demonstrated Rangers’ capability of overcoming Celtic. Yet, he also acknowledged that inconsistency against lower-ranked teams like Motherwell, St Mirren, and Hibernian has hindered their title aspirations.
Hendry elaborated on the pressure players and managers face at Rangers, stating, “The fans expect victories not just by a single goal, but by three or four.” This pressure, he believes, is not suited for everyone, and it requires individuals with exceptional qualities to thrive in such an environment.
The former player pointed out that, over the past decade, many figures associated with Rangers have struggled to meet these high expectations. He underscored the need for change if the club aspires to reclaim its position at the top of Scottish football.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Martin to see if he can galvanize a squad that has shown potential but has faltered in crucial moments. The challenges ahead are significant, but with the backing of 49ers Enterprises, there is hope within the Ibrox community that a new era of success could be on the horizon.
