A woman has been sentenced to four years in prison for extorting money from South Korean national team captain and former Tottenham Hotspur player, Son Heung-min. The individual, identified only as Yang, demanded 300 million won (approximately $204,000) from Son, claiming she was pregnant with his child. The ruling was issued by the Seoul Central District Court on Monday.

Yang’s scheme involved sending Son an ultrasound photo of a baby, which she falsely claimed was his, alongside demands for money to maintain silence. The court found that Yang had lied to Son, although it was noted she did not confirm whose child she was supposedly carrying. Yang denied the charges of extortion and attempted extortion.

In a related case, a man identified as Yong, who conspired with Yang, confessed to the charges and received a two-year prison sentence. The court described their actions as exploiting Son’s fame and “vulnerability,” resulting in significant mental anguish for him.

According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the two suspects were detained in June 2024 while Son was still with Tottenham. Prosecutors stated during the trial that Yang portrayed herself as a victim, insisting she received the money as “compensation.” They argued that her claims did not align with the facts presented.

While Son’s representatives could not be reached for comment, previous statements indicated that he had known Yang but had received demands accompanied by fabricated materials. The public affairs judge at the court did not respond to inquiries regarding the case, and a court official declined to comment further.

Earlier this year, Son transferred to Los Angeles FC from Tottenham Hotspur, marking a significant change in his career. The circumstances surrounding this case highlight the darker aspects of celebrity life, where personal vulnerabilities can be exploited for financial gain.
