Young Scots Striker McGunnigle Makes History in International Call-Up
The Hong Kong Premier League has made headlines with the inclusion of its youngest-ever goal scorer, Cai McGunnigle, in Scotland’s youth squad. McGunnigle, who at just 15 years old became the fifth youngest player to participate in the league, made history on May 25 by scoring his first goal for Hong Kong FC at the age of 16 years and one month. This impressive feat has not only solidified his place in the league’s records but has also attracted attention from international coaches.
After showcasing his talent in the league, where he plays for one of Asia’s oldest clubs, McGunnigle caught the eye of Scotland under-17 coach Brian McLaughlin. He was subsequently named in the national team for a development tournament held in Portugal. In a significant moment for his career, McGunnigle started the final match of the tournament against Italy, further demonstrating his capabilities on an international stage.
Upcoming Challenges for McGunnigle
Following his participation in the tournament, McGunnigle received another call-up. He will represent Scotland in the UEFA Under-17 EURO 2026 qualifiers taking place at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie later this month. This opportunity marks a pivotal moment in his young career as he steps into a highly competitive environment, showcasing his skills against other top European talent.
McGunnigle is not alone in his journey; he is joined by fellow Scot Jack Bennie, an 18-year-old winger also playing for Hong Kong FC. Together, they represent a growing trend of young Scottish players gaining valuable experience abroad, which could significantly benefit their national team in the future.
As McGunnigle continues to break records and earn international recognition, his story serves as an inspiring example of early talent making waves on the global football stage. The upcoming qualifiers will be a crucial test for him and his teammates as they aim for success in European competition.
