Delayed Return of Historic Plaque to Manchester’s Piccadilly Station

The long-awaited return of a significant piece of railway heritage to Manchester Piccadilly Station is finally set for this autumn, after a delay of six years. The **Manchester and Birmingham Railway plaque**, a replica of the original from **1839**, will be reinstalled on **Platform 10** near the station’s War Memorial, marking an important moment for railway enthusiasts and local history.
The plaque was removed during a major refurbishment of the station in **1998**, but it never returned after the work was completed in **2002**. The absence of this historical artifact sparked a 17-year search led by **Mel Thorley**, a retired train driver, and his friend, **Dave Smith**, a former British Transport Police officer. Their quest began when Thorley noticed the plaque was missing and set out to locate this emblem of Manchester’s railway past.
In **September 2019**, the **Manchester Evening News** reported that the plaque had been found for sale on **eBay** for **£3,700**. After confirming its authenticity, Thorley and Smith worked tirelessly with various organizations, including **Railway Magazine**, to retrieve it. Eventually, they succeeded in having the plaque seized from a scrapyard, recognizing **Network Rail** as its rightful owner.
Despite the initial enthusiasm, the journey to reinstall the plaque has been fraught with complications. Thorley recalled a conversation with **Sir Peter Hendy**, chairman of Network Rail, who expressed concerns about the potential for negative publicity during a ceremony, especially if there were delays affecting train services. This sentiment reflected the challenges faced in reintroducing such a historical item amidst operational pressures.
In recent developments, **Margaret Edge**, station delivery manager at Manchester Piccadilly, confirmed that the plaque would be placed in a prominent position by the end of **October 2023**. The frame and base for the sign are currently being constructed in **Derby**, with trial assemblies planned to ensure proper installation. Edge stated, “We know it’s been a long time coming, but we’re pleased to say the lost Manchester and Birmingham railway plaque will be returning to its rightful home in the station this autumn.”
The dedication and persistence of Thorley and Smith have been crucial in preventing the plaque from being lost to history. Thorley emphasized the importance of this piece of heritage, which had been a familiar landmark for many who used the station. “People used to say ‘meet you at the plaque’,” he noted, highlighting its significance in the community.
As the reinstallation date approaches, the excitement among railway enthusiasts and local residents continues to build. This episode not only underscores the value of preserving historical artifacts but also illustrates the challenges faced in navigating bureaucratic processes within large organizations. Following the completion of the installation, Manchester Piccadilly Station will reclaim a vital part of its identity, allowing future generations to appreciate the city’s rich railway heritage.
