Fertility Doctor Shares Crucial Insights for Prospective Parents
Fertility challenges can be emotionally taxing, affecting many couples worldwide. In a recent series of videos posted on TikTok, London-based fertility specialist Dr. Nagla Elfaki shared important advice for those struggling to conceive. Her candid remarks aim to educate patients about critical aspects of fertility, emphasizing the need for awareness and proactive health measures.
Key Advice for Those Trying to Conceive
In the first video, Dr. Elfaki presented five essential points that she believes everyone facing fertility issues should understand. She highlighted that not having a menstrual period while not on hormonal birth control is not normal and advised individuals experiencing this to consult their doctor. She also noted that periods that are excessively heavy or painful, leading to missed work or social engagements, are a cause for concern and warrant medical attention.
Another critical insight from Dr. Elfaki was the misconception surrounding the contraceptive pill. She explained that while the pill can manage painful or irregular periods, it does not address the underlying health issues that may be present. Additionally, she stressed the importance of recognizing that while a healthy lifestyle is beneficial, it cannot fully counteract the impact of age on fertility.
Dr. Elfaki concluded the first video by underscoring the significance of seeking second opinions if patients feel dismissed by their healthcare providers. This advice aims to empower individuals to advocate for their health.
In her second video, Dr. Elfaki focused on lifestyle factors that can adversely affect fertility. She warned that smoking is detrimental to both egg and sperm quality, and although vaping may not yet have extensive data, the potential risks should not be ignored. Furthermore, she emphasized that if individuals qualify for NHS-funded IVF, smoking could jeopardize their eligibility.
Dr. Elfaki also advised against delaying fertility treatment for extensive dietary changes, noting that the evidence supporting such delays is not robust. Lastly, she stressed the importance of safe sex practices, as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can negatively impact future fertility.
Breaking Stigmas and Expanding Choices
In her third video, Dr. Elfaki tackled societal pressures surrounding fertility and family planning. She urged viewers to refrain from asking women when they plan to have children, emphasizing that such questions are intrusive. She also highlighted the advantages of freezing eggs at a younger age, which can provide more options for family planning later in life.
Dr. Elfaki pointed out that individuals can become parents without a partner, even if it differs from traditional family structures. She encouraged viewers to consider their personal circumstances and make informed decisions, such as egg freezing or lifestyle changes, to suit their individual needs.
According to the NHS, around one in seven couples experience difficulties conceiving. The organization recommends that anyone trying to conceive for over a year without success consult their general practitioner (GP). For women aged 36 and older, or those already aware of potential fertility issues, seeking medical advice sooner is crucial.
The two types of infertility are defined as primary infertility—when a person has never conceived—and secondary infertility, when someone who has previously been pregnant struggles to conceive again. Various risk factors, including age, weight, smoking, and alcohol consumption, can influence fertility. Environmental stressors and exposure to certain chemicals may also affect fertility, particularly in men.
Overall, Dr. Elfaki’s insights aim to arm individuals with knowledge about their reproductive health. By fostering awareness and encouraging proactive measures, she hopes to alleviate some of the emotional burdens associated with fertility challenges.
