Georgia Mother Sentenced to Life for Murdering Daughter Amari

A Georgia mother has been sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering her eight-year-old daughter, Amari Hall, in a case that has shocked the community. Brittany Hall, 31, received a life sentence for felony murder, along with 11 counts of child cruelty, concealing a death, and making false statements. The Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office announced the sentencing on Wednesday, highlighting the severity of the crimes.
Hall, along with her partner Celeste Owens, was implicated in a broader pattern of abuse towards Hall’s three children. In December 2022, Owens was also found guilty of 20 charges, including malice murder and aggravated assault, and sentenced to life plus 235 years. The tragic case began on November 19, 2021, when Hall and Owens reported Amari missing while they stayed at a hotel with Hall’s children. They claimed that Amari had disappeared from their room during the night.
Authorities quickly grew suspicious of their account, uncovering evidence of mistreatment. CCTV footage showed the couple physically abusing all three children, prompting a more in-depth investigation. According to officials, concerning internet searches were found on Owens’ mobile phone. These included queries such as “What to do when a child doesn’t listen,” “How do I report someone missing,” and “U-Haul: Customer Account.” The searches raised alarms about the couple’s intentions leading up to Amari’s death.
The investigation revealed that Amari’s body was later discovered in a wooded area in DeKalb County, east of Atlanta. According to medical examiner Dr. Jamie Downs, Amari weighed only 54 pounds at the time of her death and exhibited visible signs of abuse, including a lacerated liver. Dr. Downs stated, “Something struck the outside of Amari’s body and crushed her liver against her spine.” The investigation also uncovered that her body had been concealed within multiple trash bags.
Kia Jimenez, a crime scene investigator from Gwinnett County, described the grim discovery, stating, “She was found with three white bin bags around her. One had been slipped over her head and ended around her abdomen.” The disturbing details of the case have left a lasting impact on the legal community and the public alike.
Sabrina Nizam, the deputy chief assistant district attorney, characterized the case as one of the worst involving a child that she had ever encountered. “The images that we have seen we will never be able to unsee,” she stated during a press conference. “This mother failed to protect her children and joined in the abuse,” remarked Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson, emphasizing the tragic outcome of the case.
The district attorney’s office continues to advocate for the healing of Amari’s siblings, who also endured abuse. “We continue to pray that her siblings can heal from the abuse they endured and that this plea brings closure to them and their extended family,” Austin-Gatson added.
This case has raised significant concerns regarding child welfare and the responsibilities of caregivers, prompting discussions about the systems in place to protect vulnerable children. As the community grapples with the aftermath, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Amari and her siblings while preventing such tragedies in the future.
