Hollie Strano Fired from WKYC After 22 Years, Pursues New Opportunities

Hollie Strano, a well-known figure in Cleveland broadcasting, was terminated from her position at WKYC Channel 3 in September 2024 after more than two decades of service. This decision followed her guilty plea for operating a vehicle under the influence in November 2023. Strano publicly stated that her dismissal was linked to her decision to share her recovery journey from alcoholism on social media. She emphasized that this incident underscores the persistent stigma associated with addiction and recovery.
The termination of Strano’s employment has attracted considerable public interest, particularly after she filed a lawsuit against WKYC and its parent company, Tegna. The lawsuit alleges wrongful termination, focusing on two main aspects: her open discussion about sobriety and her promotion of a wellness product. As of now, legal proceedings are ongoing, and neither WKYC nor Tegna has provided additional comments regarding the case.
New Beginnings in Broadcasting
Despite the challenges stemming from her dismissal, Strano has secured a new role in broadcasting. As of August 2025, she began working at Mix 94.1, a radio station in Stark County, where she delivers hourly weather updates daily from 06:00 to 22:00. The station expressed enthusiasm about her joining, highlighting her credentials as an Emmy-winning mental health advocate with over 20 years of experience in broadcasting. Strano shared her excitement on social media, stating:
“Let’s do this Stark County! So much love for you, Canton!”
In addition to her role at Mix 94.1, Strano is producing weather forecasts for stations in Georgia and Alabama. She announced this expansion on social media, expressing her honour in delivering forecasts from her hometown to southern audiences. Strano also hosts a podcast titled “Abruptly Authentic with Hollie Strano,” available on platforms like YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. The podcast features personal stories and interviews, often focusing on themes of resilience and recovery.
Legal Challenges and Implications
Strano’s lawsuit against WKYC and Tegna not only highlights her personal experiences but also raises important questions about employment rights and workplace responses to addiction. Legal experts point out that wrongful termination cases involving health-related issues or public statements can be intricate. If successful, Strano’s legal action could result in financial compensation or greater accountability for the broadcaster. Damages in such cases can vary widely, potentially exceeding £100,000 (approximately $132,000) depending on the outcome.
As the case progresses, WKYC has remained silent, refraining from commenting or responding to media inquiries. Although Strano is no longer a television presence, she has returned to broadcasting on her own terms, blending local and regional radio with podcasting and advocacy. She continues to openly discuss addiction and recovery while sharing personal updates with her audience.
Strano’s journey reflects both the challenges and opportunities faced by individuals navigating the complexities of addiction recovery and public life. Her ongoing commitment to advocacy and broadcasting demonstrates her resilience and determination to shape her narrative, even in the face of adversity.
