Three inmates at HMP Wakefield have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of child killer Kyle Bevan, who was found dead in his cell on November 5, 2023. Bevan, aged 33, was serving a life sentence for the brutal murder of his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Pembrokeshire in July 2020.

Authorities confirmed that Bevan was discovered unresponsive in his cell at 08:25 a.m. on Wednesday. The circumstances surrounding his death have prompted a full investigation by West Yorkshire Police. A police spokesperson indicated that three fellow inmates, all currently incarcerated, were taken into custody as part of this inquiry.

Details of Bevan’s Conviction

Bevan’s conviction stemmed from a horrific assault on Lola James, resulting in catastrophic brain injuries and over 100 individual injuries to the toddler. During the sentencing hearing, Mr Justice Martin Griffiths described the attack as an act of “superiority over the only person he could feel superior to – a helpless child.” In 2023, Bevan was sentenced to serve a minimum of 28 years in prison. Lola’s mother, Sinead James, received a six-year sentence for her role in allowing the circumstances that led to her daughter’s death.

This incident follows the recent fatal stabbing of Ian Watkins, a convicted paedophile, at the same high-security facility. An inspection report released shortly before Bevan’s death highlighted a troubling increase in violence at HMP Wakefield, which houses over 600 offenders, many of whom are serving sentences for high-profile crimes. The report indicated that many prisoners, especially older men convicted of sexual offences, reported feeling unsafe in the prison environment.

Ongoing Investigation and Prison Conditions

In light of Bevan’s death, the Prison Service has stated that they are unable to provide further comments while the police investigation is ongoing. A spokesperson for the Prison Service confirmed the news of Bevan’s death and acknowledged the pressures currently facing the prison.

The recent inspection report noted that “levels of violence had increased” within HMP Wakefield, contributing to an atmosphere of fear among inmates. Many prisoners expressed concerns for their safety, particularly as the population of younger inmates continues to grow.

As the investigation into Kyle Bevan’s death unfolds, it highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety and security within the prison system, particularly for those incarcerated for serious crimes. The community remains vigilant as authorities work to uncover the details surrounding this shocking incident.
