Miss Universe Contestants Walk Out in Solidarity with Miss Mexico
A significant moment unfolded during the Miss Universe pageant in Bangkok, Thailand, as contestants staged a mass walkout in solidarity with Miss Mexico, Fátima Bosch. This surprising event occurred after Nawat Itsaragrisil, the executive director of the pageant, reportedly insulted Bosch by calling her “dumb” during the sashing ceremony on October 10, 2023. Victoria Kjaer Theilvig, the newly crowned Miss Universe and the first Danish contestant to achieve this title, took the lead in the walkout. The atmosphere shifted dramatically when Itsaragrisil admonished Bosch for not promoting the pageant adequately on social media. In an apparent attempt to silence her, he stated, “I’m still talking, listen,” to which Bosch replied, “I have a voice. You’re not respecting me as a woman.”
As Itsaragrisil called for security to escort Bosch from the venue, other contestants began to leave in protest. The situation escalated, with the executive director attempting to regain control by demanding that the remaining contestants stay seated. His repeated commands of “stop” and “sit down” were met with resistance as many chose to stand in solidarity with Bosch.
The video of the walkout quickly spread on social media, garnering significant attention. Supporters praised the contestants for their courage and integrity in standing up against disrespectful treatment. The display of unity was hailed as a powerful statement against sexism in the pageant industry.
In response to the controversy, Raúl Rocha, president of Miss Universe, issued a statement condemning Itsaragrisil’s behavior. He emphasized that the pageant should uphold values of respect and dignity towards women. “I will not allow the values of respect and dignity toward women to be violated,” Rocha stated. He criticized Itsaragrisil for forgetting the true essence of being a host, which entails supporting and assisting all delegates.
The event has sparked widespread discussion about the treatment of contestants and the expectations placed on them. Many former contestants and fans have echoed Rocha’s sentiments, calling for a cultural shift within the pageant to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all participants.
