Manchester United Stars Face World Cup Uncertainty After Qualifying Setbacks
Manchester United players Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbuemo are now facing uncertainty regarding their participation in the upcoming World Cup. The two athletes, who were significant signings for the club this summer at a combined cost exceeding £120 million, have encountered qualifying challenges with their respective national teams.
As nations finalize their spots for the 2026 World Cup, both players find themselves in precarious positions. Mbuemo represented Cameroon in a recent match against Angola, where the game ended in a 0-0 draw. This result meant that Cameroon missed out on an automatic qualification spot, falling behind Cape Verde. Consequently, Cameroon must now navigate a playoff route, requiring them to win four consecutive matches to secure a place in the tournament.
For Sesko and his team, Slovenia, the situation is similarly dire. They played two matches this past week, both ending in 0-0 draws against Switzerland and Kosovo. Slovenia is currently positioned third in their qualification group, four points behind Kosovo, who occupy the second spot. With Switzerland likely to clinch the top position, Slovenia needs to secure victories in their final two matches to have a chance at the playoffs.
The challenges faced by Sesko and Mbuemo are not isolated. Other prominent players from the Premier League also risk missing out on the World Cup. Alexander Isak, who transferred to Liverpool for £125 million, finds himself in a similar predicament as Sweden languishes at the bottom of Slovenia’s group. The Swedish team has only managed to earn one point from their four matches, making qualification for the playoffs highly unlikely.
Italy, another football powerhouse, is also struggling. The Azzurri are currently trying to catch up to Norway in their qualifying group and may need to enter the playoffs to avoid missing their third consecutive World Cup. This situation highlights a significant concern for teams that invested heavily in player acquisitions during the summer transfer window. The combined cost for the five players mentioned, including Sesko, Mbuemo, Isak, and others, totals around £325 million.
As the World Cup approaches, the pressure intensifies for these athletes and their national teams. The outcome of the remaining qualification matches will determine whether they will have the opportunity to compete on football’s biggest stage next June. The situation remains fluid, and fans of Manchester United and the respective national teams will be closely monitoring these developments as the tournament draws nearer.
