Montenegro’s Government Commits to Reforms and EU Integration
The Vice Prime Minister of Montenegro, Momo Koprivica, met on March 15, 2024, with Emanuele Žiofre, Deputy Executive Director for Western Europe at the European External Action Service (EEAS). The meeting, which also included Johan Satler, the EU Ambassador to Montenegro, focused on the importance of reforms and rule of law in advancing Montenegro’s European integration efforts.
Koprivica expressed gratitude to the European Union for its ongoing support of Montenegro’s reform processes. He emphasized that the government remains fully committed to implementing crucial reforms, particularly in the areas of rule of law, strengthening institutions, and enhancing political dialogue. “The government places significant importance on building broad political consensus around European priorities, as well as ensuring the staffing of all institutions responsible for the rule of law, while also strengthening their independence and financial sustainability,” he stated.
The Vice Prime Minister highlighted the qualitative transformation of the legal system aligned with EU legal standards as a key priority. He also acknowledged the EU Delegation in Podgorica and the European Union for their support in the destruction of seized cigarettes at the Bar Free Zone. This event was described by Koprivica as a “significant test of Montenegro’s institutional determination,” which concluded in a credible manner.
EU Acknowledges Progress, Urges Continued Reform
Emanuele Žiofre affirmed that the European Union appreciates the progress Montenegro has made thus far, but emphasized the need for an accelerated pace of reforms. He underscored the importance of maintaining inclusivity and dialogue among all relevant socio-political actors. During the meeting, both parties agreed on the necessity of continuing reforms, aligning legislation with European standards, ensuring institutional stability, and fostering constructive inter-party dialogue as essential elements for Montenegro’s advancement on its European path.
The Montenegrin government reiterated its commitment to fulfilling European obligations, emphasizing strong adherence to the principles of transparency, accountability, and institutional efficiency. This commitment reflects Montenegro’s determination to integrate further into the European framework while addressing challenges that lie ahead.
