A fresh food and drink destination named Tangerine is set to open beneath the tracks of Salford Central Railway Station on October 31, 2023. After more than a year of development, a team of hospitality professionals has transformed two historic railway arches into a vibrant space that integrates the best of the city’s culinary and artistic offerings.

Located on New Bailey Street, Tangerine features a canteen, a bar, and a music hall, accommodating up to 300 guests. The renovation of two previously derelict rail archways includes a meticulous repurposing of materials, vehicles, and artwork, resulting in a creative environment that echoes the station’s industrial heritage.

Unique Culinary Experience

At the heart of Tangerine is the Canteen Kitchens, which will serve as a platform for Manchester’s independent eateries. This innovative space will host seven kitchens, including Vanda, a family-run Ukrainian bakery inspired by Parisian cuisine, and Panthera Hot Taco, a new Mexican taqueria. Other offerings will include Juicy, featuring gourmet burgers, and Yo Dutchie, a Dutch-Japanese concept specializing in loaded fries and Yakitori skewers. Additionally, a new Korean and Ramen concept from the creators of Unagi will be introduced soon.

Complementing the food offerings, Tangerine will also include a florist, an in-house coffee roastery with daily fresh beans, a delicatessen, and a wine store. The Cantina Collective will adapt to seasonal changes, providing a dynamic culinary experience. This initiative is supported by Want Studios, led by Executive Chef Will Taplin, known for his work at Ramona and Firehouse.

Entertainment and Artistic Flair

The venue promises more than just food and drink. The Grand Departures bar will feature a taproom with 40 taps, alongside an espresso martini bar integrated into the original brickwork of the arches. A dedicated Arthouse will serve as a platform for cinematic screenings and live performances, while the music hall will host established and emerging artists, enriching the cultural landscape of Greater Manchester.

Andy Windsor, director of Want Studios, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Tangerine unites the city’s independent kitchens, bartenders, bakeries, and entertainment specialists. It is a unique showcase of what we do in the city. Tangerine isn’t just another venue – it’s a new space for creativity, food, and culture, and we’re proud to be part of it.”

Tangerine will officially open to the public with a four-day Halloween weekend celebration, featuring live music, DJ sets, pop-up performances, and exclusive food and drink offerings from the Cantina Collective. Admission is free with advance sign-up, and tickets are expected to be in high demand as the city gears up for this exciting new addition to its vibrant scene.
