The psychological thriller “Mother, May I?” is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, just in time for Halloween. This film, which has garnered attention as a “must-watch,” features strong performances from actors Kyle Gallner and Holland Roden. The plot centers around Emmett, portrayed by Gallner, who must confront unresolved issues with his mother following her death. His journey takes him to her home, accompanied by his girlfriend, Anya (Roden), where he faces unsettling experiences that blur the lines between reality and the supernatural.
“Mother, May I?” has received an impressive 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics commending its powerful performances and intricate storytelling. The film premiered at the Fantasy Filmfest in April 2023 before its theatrical release in July. Reviews have praised its depth, with the Los Angeles Times describing it as a “handsome-looking ghost story” that explores the haunting nature of familial relationships.
Critical Reception Highlights
Several publications have highlighted the strengths of “Mother, May I?” The Guardian noted that while the film’s final act may not tie everything together perfectly, it showcases significant craftsmanship and exceptional acting from the leads. Cultured Vultures emphasized the “thoughtful and sensitive performances” from Gallner and Roden, solidifying its status as a film worth watching.
In a review, Bloody Disgusting remarked that the film’s success hinges on the performances of its leads, stating, “They completely deliver.” The review characterized the movie as a “simmering slow burn” filled with psychosexual tension and visually stunning moments. Similarly, Paste Magazine praised it for being “authentically, vulnerably, fantastically acted,” highlighting its emotional depth.
Insights from the Stars
In an interview with Filmhounds Magazine, Gallner shared his thoughts on the film’s unique premise. He explained that the supernatural elements—where Anya begins to exhibit behaviors reminiscent of Emmett’s late mother—create a complex narrative that prompts the characters to confront their traumas. “He’s coming face-to-face with his trauma, and you don’t know what’s real and what’s not,” he said.
Gallner also reflected on the challenges faced by Emmett and Anya as they navigate their relationship, particularly during a pivotal time in their lives. The film’s exploration of their future aspirations, juxtaposed with the anxiety stemming from his mother’s death, adds layers to their dynamic. “It’s a really unique cluster,” he noted, emphasizing the psychological intricacies that the characters experience.
“Mother, May I?” is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, offering audiences an engaging blend of horror and psychological depth. With its thought-provoking narrative and compelling performances, it stands out as a notable addition to this year’s Halloween viewing options.
