Reform UK’s head of policy, Zia Yusuf, has firmly stated that former Prime Minister Boris Johnson would never be welcomed into the party. During an interview with Sky News on October 15, 2023, Yusuf criticized Johnson’s tenure, labeling him as “one of the worst prime ministers in British history” and accusing him of betraying those who voted for Brexit.

Yusuf condemned what he referred to as the “Boris wave,” describing it as a significant surge in legal immigration that followed the post-Brexit visa policies introduced under Johnson starting in January 2021. “He threw open our borders,” Yusuf declared, claiming that the influx of non-European Union migrants was a betrayal of Brexit supporters.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage echoed similar sentiments during an appearance on the BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg. When asked about the possibility of Johnson joining Reform UK, Farage responded, “I don’t think that would really work,” adding that the ramifications of the “Boris wave” are profound. “Millions of people allowed into Britain, most of whom, by the way, don’t even work, and are costing us a fortune,” he stated, emphasizing the financial burden this immigration surge has placed on the country.

While discussing the challenges facing Reform UK, Farage pinpointed a lack of experience at the governmental level as the party’s most significant weakness. He suggested that Nadine Dorries, who recently joined Reform UK, could help address this gap with her political experience. “Nadine came yesterday. She’s the first, and there will be others,” he noted, acknowledging the need for experienced personnel to strengthen the party’s capabilities.

In contrast, Anna Turley, chair of the Labour Party, criticized Farage’s remarks, arguing that they reveal a lack of a coherent plan for the country. “Nigel Farage has no plan for Britain,” she said, adding that expressing uncertainty about his team’s competence does not reflect patriotism but rather egotism. “Britain deserves better,” she concluded.

Conservative Party chairman Kevin Hollinrake responded to the prospect of a collaboration between Farage and Johnson, dismissing the idea as unlikely. In an interview with Sky News, he stated, “Not at all, that’s not going to happen,” while also expressing his disagreement with some of Dorries’ opinions. Hollinrake further criticized the financial proposals from Reform UK, particularly their failure to address the country’s substantial fiscal deficit.

He pointed out that the party has not provided a clear strategy for managing the estimated £140 billion annual shortfall, especially considering the existing deficit stemming from previous Labour policies. “You’re talking about spending commitments, nearly £300 billion a year more than we’re collecting in taxes. This is simply impossible,” he asserted.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the dynamics between Reform UK, Boris Johnson, and the Conservative Party remain contentious, with both sides weighing their strategies as they move forward.
