Young Striker Cai McGunnigle Shines in Scotland Youth Squad
Cai McGunnigle, the youngest-ever goal scorer in the Hong Kong Premier League, has been selected to represent Scotland in an upcoming youth tournament. The talented striker, who made history at just 16 years and one month old, scored his first goal for Hong Kong FC on May 25, making him the youngest player to find the net in the league’s history. His remarkable performance has drawn attention from coaches at the national level.
McGunnigle’s journey began when he became the fifth youngest player to participate in the Hong Kong Premier League, stepping onto the field for Hong Kong FC at the age of 15. His impressive skills and determination have set him apart, ultimately leading to his selection for the Scotland under-17 team by coach Brian McLaughlin. The team will compete in a development tournament in Portugal this month.
Success on the International Stage
During the tournament in Portugal, McGunnigle made a significant impact by starting in the final match against Italy. His performance showcased his potential on an international stage, further solidifying his place among Scotland’s rising stars. Following this tournament, McGunnigle received another call-up for the UEFA Under-17 EURO 2026 qualifiers. These matches are scheduled to take place at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie later this month, providing him with yet another opportunity to demonstrate his talent.
McGunnigle is not the only young Scot making waves at Hong Kong FC. Jack Bennie, an 18-year-old winger, also plays for the club and contributes to the team’s success. Their experiences in the Hong Kong Premier League are shaping their careers and providing them with invaluable exposure to competitive football.
The achievements of players like McGunnigle and Bennie highlight the growing talent within Scottish football and the potential for young athletes to shine on international platforms. As they continue to develop their skills and gain experience, both players are poised for promising futures in the sport.
The inclusion of McGunnigle in the national squad underscores the importance of nurturing young talent in football. His journey from the Hong Kong Premier League to the national team serves as an inspiration for aspiring footballers in Scotland and beyond.
