An alarming incident unfolded on October 3, 2023, when an 11-year-old boy, identified as Cole Frazee, was pursued by a black bear into a Family Dollar store in Pennsylvania. As Cole entered the store to check on his father, who had been inside for some time, he was met with the terrifying sight of the bear following closely behind him.

Witnesses inside the store described the scene as chaotic. The bear, reportedly weighing over 200 pounds, dashed through the entrance just moments after Cole. Shoppers and employees were taken by surprise as the animal chased the boy, leading to screams and panic. The quick-thinking staff acted decisively, closing the doors to prevent the bear from escaping the store.

Once inside, the bear leaped over the counter in an attempt to reach Cole. Fortunately, the boy managed to escape to a secure area while store employees attempted to deter the animal. They used various objects to keep the bear at bay until local wildlife officers arrived on the scene.

According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, black bear encounters are relatively uncommon in urban areas but can occur during the fall months when bears search for food before hibernation. The commission advises residents to be cautious, especially in areas where bear sightings are reported.

The bear was eventually tranquilized by officials and relocated to a safer environment, far from populated areas. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has raised concerns among local residents regarding wildlife interactions in suburban settings.

Cole’s father, who had been shopping when the bear entered, expressed relief that his son was unharmed. “I can’t believe what happened. I never expected a bear to come into the store like that. We’re just thankful Cole is okay,” he said.

This frightening encounter serves as a reminder of the need for awareness around wildlife behavior, especially in areas where urban development intersects with natural habitats. As more people live near bear territories, it is crucial for communities to stay informed and prepared for unexpected wildlife encounters.
