Britain Braces for Cold Snap as Arctic Air Invades Country

Britain is preparing for a significant drop in temperatures, with forecasts indicating that the country may experience conditions colder than those in Moscow. As an Arctic air mass moves across the UK, temperatures could plummet to as low as -10°C (14°F). Weather experts have warned that this intense cold, dubbed an “Arctic attack,” could bring winter’s first significant snowfall, with predictions of up to eight inches accumulating in some areas this week.

The temperature shift is dramatic, with highs expected to fall from around 18°C last week to just 4-7°C in many regions from Monday until Saturday. This sudden change is described as a “shock to the system,” according to meteorological reports. The Met Office has issued alerts indicating a “risk of snow for many areas,” particularly in northern England, north Wales, and Scotland, starting tomorrow, March 5, 2024. The southern regions and the Midlands may also face snowfall as the week progresses.

BBC Weather forecasts sleet in London and snow in Birmingham on Wednesday night, while icy conditions threaten many areas. Nighttime temperatures could drop as low as -10°C in Scotland and -3°C in southern England. In comparison, Moscow is expected to experience lows of -1°C.

Computer models from The Weather Outlook suggest that higher ground in northern regions could see snow accumulations of 15-20 cm by midweek. This potential for significant snowfall has led bookmakers Coral to adjust their odds for a white Christmas in various cities, now offering 7/4 in Newcastle, 2/1 in Manchester, 5/2 in Birmingham, and 4/1 in London. Coral spokesman John Hill noted, “The odds are falling faster than the mercury.”

Preparations are underway in local authorities, with Cheshire East Council deploying 21 gritters and filling 500 grit bins in anticipation of the harsh conditions. Councillor Mark Goldsmith, chair of the highways committee, emphasized the council’s commitment to keeping roads safe and accessible, stating, “We will act quickly whatever the weather brings.”

A forecaster from the Met Office indicated that the country should prepare for a colder and potentially wintry spell. As Arctic air spreads, temperatures are expected to drop several degrees below the seasonal norm. By midweek, the risk of sleet and snow will extend to various parts of northern England and north Wales, with some models predicting accumulating snow even in southern regions.

Brian Gaze, a forecaster at The Weather Outlook, remarked on the abrupt transition from record warmth in November to this cold front. He noted, “Frost will be widespread. Temperatures in Scottish glens could dip to -10°C, and even the South is expected to fall several degrees below freezing.”
