British Man Dies After Hair Transplant Procedure in Istanbul

A former educator from Milton Keynes has tragically passed away following a hair transplant operation in Istanbul. Martyn Latchman, 38, who transitioned from a 16-year teaching career to a role as a defence contractor, died last week after becoming unwell during the preparatory phase of the £1,500 procedure. The clinic involved, Dr Cinik, located in the Besiktaş area of the city, confirmed the incident and stated that the cause of Latchman’s illness remains unknown.
Latchman was transferred to an intensive care unit at a nearby university hospital, where he died later that day. Turkish media outlets reported that police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Following the incident, Latchman’s body was returned to the UK for burial. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office stated, “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Originally from Bridgend in south Wales, Latchman had served as the assistant headteacher at Goldington Academy in Bedford until December 2022. His LinkedIn profile indicated he was also the head of computer science at the institution. Friends and family have shared heartfelt tributes on social media, with one post from Yashley Latchman stating, “Rest in Peace my brother. You will forever be my source of inspiration and motivation.” Another friend commented, “Yes, Yashley, very sad. Too young.”
Investigation and Clinic Response
According to Dr Cinik, the clinic has completed over 50,000 successful hair transplants, with notable clients including former England footballer Rio Ferdinand and other international athletes such as Ivan Rakitić, Djibril Cissé, and Rivaldo. In a statement, the clinic expressed its deep sadness regarding Latchman’s death and emphasized that he had previously undergone a successful hair transplant in the summer of 2022.
The clinic asserted that all necessary medical evaluations, including blood tests and imaging, were conducted thoroughly prior to the second operation. “These assessments were supervised by an anaesthesiologist, and the patient was cleared for surgery,” the statement detailed.
Unfortunately, during the preparatory phase, Latchman unexpectedly became unwell, leading to immediate medical intervention. Despite the urgent transfer to a fully equipped university hospital and intensive care treatment throughout the day, he sadly passed away that evening.
The clinic also refuted claims circulating in Turkish media that Latchman died during the procedure or that the operation had been interrupted. “The incident occurred before the hair transplant procedure had begun,” they clarified. They have submitted all relevant medical documentation to the appropriate authorities, and the matter is currently under investigation by judicial bodies.
Due to the ongoing legal process and out of respect for the family’s privacy, no further details will be disclosed at this time.
