Montenegro’s President Calls for Calm After Podgorica Attack
President Jakov Milatović of Montenegro condemned the recent attack in Podgorica that left a local resident injured. The incident, which occurred on October 29, 2023, has drawn significant public attention and concern about safety and immigration policies in the region.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Milatović expressed his support for the victim and their family. He urged relevant authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for transparent communication with the public.
“All citizens should remain calm and exercise restraint. There must be no place for collective guilt or stigmatization of any group,” Milatović stated. He highlighted the importance of protecting public safety, maintaining social cohesion, and upholding law and order.
The president stressed that public figures must ensure their messages do not escalate tensions. He called on law enforcement and the judiciary to actively combat hate speech and any form of threats.
Need for Responsible Immigration Policies
Milatović also addressed the pressing issue of immigration, advocating for a policy that balances firmness against abuse and crime with fairness towards those who respect local laws. “Montenegro needs a policy that is strict on abuses and crime but fair to everyone who abides by our regulations,” he remarked.
He outlined that effective security checks, appropriate sanctions for illegal activities, and enhanced monitoring are essential components of a responsible immigration framework. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to communicate clearly that individuals who live and work in Montenegro lawfully are welcomed and safe.
The president recalled that he had previously warned about the importance of addressing migration issues and establishing a clear, balanced, and responsible state policy in this area. “Unfortunately, there have been no concrete institutional steps taken to date. Today’s event should serve as a catalyst for serious and sustainable measures that benefit all citizens,” Milatović concluded.
He urged Montenegro to demonstrate maturity by strictly enforcing immigration laws while ensuring fairness and calm during a time when tensions could easily rise. The call for responsible governance in immigration policy underscores the broader context of security and societal stability in Montenegro as it navigates complex challenges ahead.
