Travel Expert Reveals Simple Trick to Get Luggage First
A travel expert has unveiled a straightforward method that could help passengers retrieve their luggage more quickly upon landing. Hadleigh Diamond, the commercial director at SCS Chauffeurs, suggests that requesting a fragile sticker at check-in could place your bag among the first to be offloaded from the aircraft.
This tip, shared by both airport ground staff and frequent flyers, is not only effective but also free. Passengers are advised to ask the check-in agent for a fragile label, typically used for delicate items such as glassware. This practice often results in bags being loaded last into the aircraft, which means they are also among the first to be removed upon arrival.
How the Fragile Sticker Works
According to Diamond, the difference between a smooth travel experience and a frustrating one often hinges on how quickly one can collect their luggage. He noted, “If you’re standing waiting for 30 minutes while the carousel clunks out someone else’s bags, your trip can feel so much longer.” The fragile sticker trick may help mitigate this common issue.
While the practice is not guaranteed, Diamond asserts that it has proven to be effective on multiple occasions. Passengers do not need to provide an elaborate explanation; a simple, polite request for the sticker should suffice. “We’ve heard this tip from both airport ground staff and frequent flyers. More often than not, your bag is among the first out,” he added.
Airport baggage handling typically follows a standardized procedure. Items marked as “Fragile” are loaded last into the cargo hold to minimize the risk of damage and are removed first to avoid being placed beneath heavier luggage. This means that even travelers seated towards the back of the plane could find their suitcase waiting for them at arrivals.
Impact on Travel Experience
This minor advantage can be particularly beneficial for passengers with tight connections, pre-arranged transfers, or those traveling with children. Reducing the wait time at the baggage carousel by 20 to 30 minutes can significantly enhance the post-flight experience. With luggage collection delays sometimes exceeding 40 minutes at major airports during peak travel periods, such tips are invaluable.
As travelers prepare for upcoming winter sun getaways, it is also crucial to be mindful of travel insurance pitfalls. According to a recent report by ChronicleLive, certain mistakes could invalidate travel insurance, potentially leaving travelers unprotected. Adam Edinburgh, head of travel and new products at Post Office, emphasized the importance of thoroughly checking insurance policies before departure.
Edinburgh advises potential travelers to take a few minutes to list any planned activities and medical conditions, including medications, to ensure they are adequately covered. He noted that many people opt for the cheapest insurance option without considering the specifics, which could lead to complications should they need to file a claim.
For those looking to improve their travel experience and ensure that they are adequately prepared for their journeys, both the fragile sticker trick and a careful review of travel insurance policies can serve as beneficial strategies.
