Burray Boys Launch Fundraiser After Father’s Battery Explosion

A recent accident involving a battery explosion has prompted two young boys from Burray, Scotland, to organize a significant fundraiser for Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA). Caleb Sutherland and his friend Louie Wilson will undertake a challenging 20-mile cycle ride on April 19, 2024, to raise funds for the charity that played a crucial role in the recovery of Caleb’s father.

Three weeks ago, Caleb’s father, Gavin Sutherland, experienced a serious incident when a battery exploded in his front trouser pocket while he was at work. Gavin was at a sink, employed by Sheila Fleet Jewellery, when the battery detonated without any prior warning. “All of a sudden, I just felt heat. It was like a firework—it just went off!” he recounted in an interview with The Orcadian. The explosion burned a hole in his pocket, prompting him to quickly remove the battery.

Initially expecting to receive only a bandage and some cream for the burn at The Balfour hospital, Gavin was later airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary due to the severity of his injuries. His wife, Deborah Sutherland, and their two children, including seven-year-old Ena and nine-year-old Caleb, awaited his return in Burray. They expressed immense gratitude for the air ambulance service, which provided critical assistance when medical resources in Orkney were insufficient.

In response to their family’s ordeal, Caleb and Louie decided to take action. The two boys will cycle from The Sands Hotel in Burray to Burwick Pier in South Ronaldsay and back, a distance of 20 miles. They have already garnered support, raising over £1,000 in sponsorship ahead of their ride.

Caleb’s determination to honor his father’s experience by helping others underscores the impact of the air ambulance service. Donations for their fundraiser can be made online, with all proceeds going to support SCAA’s vital operations.

The community’s response to the boys’ initiative highlights the solidarity in Burray, as residents come together to support both the fundraiser and the Sutherland family during their recovery process.
