Local Legend Arthur Maddock Passes Away at 81, Leaving Legacy

Arthur Maddock, a cherished fishmonger and beloved figure in the community of Birkenhead, passed away this week at the age of 81. His death leaves behind his wife, Leslie Maddock, and three children, Arthur, Rosemary, and Suzanne Maddock, the latter who is known for her role as PC Cass Rickman in ITV’s *The Bill*.
For over five decades, Maddock was a familiar presence around Birkenhead and Wallasey‘s Great Float, becoming renowned for selling fresh seafood from his boat, the Manx Beauty. This historic vessel, built in 1937 to support the fishing industry of the Isle of Man, is currently owned by the Cellardyke Trust, which is working to restore it. Tragically, Maddock did not live to see that restoration, a project he had long hoped for.
Suzanne shared her father’s story with the *ECHO*, highlighting his deep roots in the fishing community. “My dad left school to become a fisherman with his dad in 1958,” she said. “He also served as a lifeboat man and mechanic for the New Brighton RNLI during the 1960s.”
Maddock was one of eight siblings and quickly earned a reputation as a “well-respected member of the community” known for his warm smile and good humor. Suzanne recalled fond memories of spending Thursdays with her father at the fish market in Liverpool, where they would select fish to sell together.
Community Remembers a Local Icon
Tributes have poured in for Maddock following his passing. Many community members described him as a “legend.” One individual reminisced, “I used to visit his boat at lunchtime and buy three bags of shrimps every time. I was gutted when he sold his boat.” Others expressed their sorrow upon encountering him walking his dog along the promenade, where friendly chats were a common occurrence.
The New Brighton Lifeboat Station expressed their condolences, stating, “All of us at New Brighton RNLI were saddened to hear of the passing of Arthur Maddock on Monday, September 1, 2025. Arthur was a mechanic at New Brighton RNLI for 12 years in the 1960s, and we thank him for his service to saving lives at sea.” In a gesture of respect, the station announced that their flag would be flown at half-mast in his honor.
Suzanne reflected on her father’s impact, noting, “Loads of people have been reaching out to me—people I don’t know. My dad had so many friends. Hundreds of people knew him, and they’ve all shared lovely messages.” When asked to encapsulate her father’s character, she simply stated, “Loved by everybody and a proper boat captain with a massive heart and a big smile.”
Maddock’s legacy as a community stalwart and a dedicated fisherman will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him in the Wirral region.
