Locals in Botun Intensify Protests with Site Blockades
Residents of Botun have escalated their protests against local authorities by initiating blockades at construction sites from 06:00 to 12:00 daily. During this period, they are preventing workers from entering the premises. The protests aim to express dissatisfaction with unfulfilled promises and perceived selective enforcement of laws.
Milan Knežević, President of the Democratic People’s Party, stated last week that the protestors’ goal is to bring down the current government. He pledged his support to the Botun community throughout their struggle, according to RTCG. The residents have called on those who share their concerns to join their cause, urging Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, Mayor of Podgorica Sasa Mujović, and Director of Water Supply Aleksandar Nišavić to engage in negotiations to find a resolution.
The protestors have expressed frustration with what they describe as a lack of accountability from the government. They have demanded substantial action rather than empty promises, highlighting that the law seems to be applied selectively. In response, Sasa Mujović has stated that he is open to dialogue but insists it must be on sustainable terms.
Concerns Over Wastewater Treatment Plant
Central to the residents’ discontent is the decision by the Zeta Municipality Assembly to prohibit the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in Botun. The locals do not recognize this decision, nor do they acknowledge the referendum results issued by state authorities regarding the project.
The opposition argues that the plant poses environmental risks and is not in line with the community’s needs. As tensions rise, the residents remain determined to voice their grievances, insisting that their demands for transparency and accountability should not be ignored.
The ongoing protests underscore a broader struggle between local citizens and government officials over development projects that residents feel do not serve their interests. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on the potential for dialogue and the impact of these blockades on the future of Botun.
