Montenegro’s President Champions Budva as Tourism Driver
Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, has proclaimed Budva as a pivotal force in the country’s tourism and economic development. During a ceremony commemorating the municipality’s day, he recognized the city’s historical significance and its ongoing transformation into a major tourist destination.
Milatović highlighted Budva’s resilience throughout history, having faced numerous invasions and subsequent restorations. He noted that the city’s foundation is deeply rooted in the commitment of its residents, exemplified by the bravery of the First Bokelj Brigade, which liberated Budva from fascist occupiers on November 22, 1944. This event marked Budva’s emergence as a free city, a sentiment that resonates with its citizens today.
Tourism and Identity at the Forefront
In his address, Milatović emphasized that while Budva currently serves as a catalyst for Montenegro’s tourism and economic growth, the surrounding sea should be viewed not merely as a resource, but as a cultural heritage and an expression of the identity of its inhabitants. He stated, “Budva and Montenegro can no longer afford the luxury of politics focusing on itself, rather than on development and citizens.”
The President called for a unified effort to position Montenegro as a future European Union member, urging citizens to adopt European values through diligent work, transformation, and adherence to established rules. He pointed out that sustainable development, responsible investment, and effective municipal management, alongside careful spatial planning, are essential for achieving success.
Milatović expressed his vision for Budva to become a modern and developed European destination, deserving of its title as the “pearl of the Mediterranean.” He extended his best wishes to all Budva residents, reiterating his congratulations on their municipality day.
Future Aspirations
The President’s remarks reflect a broader ambition for Montenegro to enhance its reputation as a tourist hotspot, attracting visitors not only from the region but also from Europe and beyond. The natural beauty of Budva, combined with its diverse tourism offerings and the warm hospitality of its people, positions it as an attractive destination.
As Montenegro seeks to navigate its future within a larger European framework, the emphasis on community engagement and sustainable practices will be crucial. The commitment to responsible governance and urban planning will play a significant role in shaping Budva’s evolution as a vibrant, modern city.
