Nigerian Correctional Service Responds to Claims of Menstrual Neglect
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially denied allegations regarding the lack of menstrual care for female inmates. In a statement released on Sunday, the agency described the claims as false and misleading, asserting that they do not accurately reflect conditions within correctional facilities across Nigeria.
In his statement, Adamu Duza, the Public Relations Officer for the NCoS Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, addressed the narrative that female inmates were being neglected in terms of menstrual hygiene. The claims were specifically linked to the Medium Security Custodial Centre Suleja. Duza emphasized that the NCoS is committed to providing sanitary pads and hygiene kits to all female inmates at no cost. This distribution occurs monthly and is documented in inmates’ welfare registers.
According to Duza, the NCoS has established a healthcare unit within custodial centers staffed by qualified nurses and doctors. These professionals address the medical needs of female inmates, including issues related to menstruation. The healthcare services include free consultations, necessary medications, and referrals to nearby hospitals when required.
In addition to internal provisions, the NCoS collaborates with various development partners, civil society organizations, and faith-based groups. These collaborations often result in donations of sanitary products and the organization of menstrual hygiene awareness sessions. Recently, the NCoS received a significant donation of sanitary pads from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), which further supports their efforts in promoting menstrual hygiene.
The NCoS reiterated its commitment to upholding the dignity and humane treatment of all inmates, aligning its practices with the Nigerian Constitution, the Nelson Mandela Rules, and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
Duza urged journalists to verify the sources of their information about the Nigerian Correctional Service to avoid misleading the public. This call for accuracy underscores the importance of credible reporting, especially concerning sensitive issues affecting vulnerable populations.
By providing essential menstrual care and ensuring the health and well-being of female inmates, the NCoS aims to foster a humane environment within its facilities.
