Workers at Cardiff Bus have paused a planned strike following an improved pay offer from the company, as confirmed by the Unite union. Approximately 450 members of Unite were set to walk out from August 17 to September 7, 2023, in protest over pay disparities. The strike action will remain on hold while union members vote on the new proposal.

The decision to suspend the strike comes after Cardiff Bus resumed negotiations and presented an enhanced offer. According to Peter Hughes, the Unite regional secretary, “Cardiff Bus has returned to negotiations and put an improved offer on the table. Unite has therefore suspended strike action to allow members to be balloted on the proposals.”

In addition to the pay increase, the new offer includes changes to working conditions that are expected to benefit employees. These changes involve longer breaks and improved terms for sickness leave. The union has expressed optimism that the revised proposal will meet the expectations of its members.

Cardiff Bus, which is publicly owned, plays a crucial role in providing a comprehensive network of services in Cardiff and surrounding areas, including Penarth and Barry, located in the Vale of Glamorgan. The company has been approached for further comments regarding the negotiations and the specifics of the new offer.

As the union members prepare to vote, the outcome will determine whether the proposed changes will be accepted or if further action will be required. The suspension of the strike highlights the ongoing dialogue between the union and Cardiff Bus, reflecting a commitment to resolving the pay dispute while ensuring service continuity for passengers in the region.
