A 24-year-old man from Grimsby, identified as Leo Tuplin, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a series of violent attacks against a woman. The sentencing took place at Grimsby Crown Court on [insert date of sentencing], where Tuplin faced charges of non-fatal strangulation, actual bodily harm, and criminal damage. Additionally, he has received a ten-year restraining order.

The case was brought to light following a report to Humberside Police in December 2022 from a third-party support agency. The woman disclosed a violent history with Tuplin, detailing incidents that included being pushed with such force that furniture broke beneath her. Over the following days, she provided further accounts of multiple violent encounters that spanned over a year.

Detectives initiated an investigation, gathering witness statements and photographic evidence of the injuries sustained by the victim. This comprehensive effort culminated in Tuplin being classified as wanted, leading to his arrest in January 2023. During his time in custody, he maintained his innocence, providing no comments during questioning.

Speaking about the trauma inflicted upon her, the victim expressed her desire to help others in similar situations. “I want this to be a warning to other men like Tuplin,” she stated. “It was a living hell, and I won’t ever forget the flashbacks or the trauma which continues to affect my ability to trust. I want to raise awareness and encourage others to recognize the abuse, tell someone, and feel empowered to take action. You are not alone.”

Detective Inspector Jayne Coutts, from the Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Investigation Teams, praised the victim’s courage in testifying against Tuplin. “Despite his attempts to control the situation by initially pleading not guilty, the strength and resilience shown by the woman ultimately led to his guilty plea, sparing her from the ordeal of a trial,” she said.

Inspector Coutts emphasized the severe impact of Tuplin’s actions, highlighting that the abuse included physical assaults that left lasting emotional and physical scars. “Violence against women and girls is wholly unacceptable,” she added, encouraging anyone experiencing or witnessing domestic abuse to report it to authorities through their non-emergency number, 101.

For those in immediate danger, the police advise calling 999. If speaking is not an option, individuals can cough or tap the handset to communicate their situation, or press 55 to be directly connected to police assistance.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the importance of speaking out against such inhumane acts. The victim’s bravery and the police’s diligent work demonstrate the effectiveness of support systems in bringing offenders to justice.
