North Wales Launches Knife Amnesty to Combat Violent Crime
A week-long initiative aimed at reducing knife crime commenced in North Wales on November 17, 2019. This campaign, known as Operation Sceptre, is part of a national effort involving all 43 police forces across the UK and the British Transport Police to tackle the rising issue of knife-related violence.
As part of this coordinated strategy, residents are encouraged to safely dispose of unwanted knives in amnesty bins. These bins are available at the front counters of police stations and select recycling centres throughout North Wales. Notable locations include Wrexham and Llay Police Stations, as well as the Bryn Lane, Lodge, and Plas Madoc recycling centres.
Community Engagement and Retailer Cooperation
During the week, officers from North Wales Police will collaborate with local retailers to ensure responsible knife sales. This includes reinforcing the ‘Challenge 25’ policy regarding ID checks and providing “knowledge checks” for staff on the sale of knives.
Community Safety Sergeant Claire Parry emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Every knife taken off the streets makes our communities safer. Carrying a knife doesn’t protect you – it puts you at greater risk of harm.” She urged the public to think critically about their choices and take advantage of this opportunity to surrender any unwanted knives or weapons.
The campaign also highlights recent changes under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019, which now prohibits possession of certain items such as knuckledusters, throwing stars, and zombie knives, even in private settings. This legislation aims to further curb the presence of dangerous weapons in communities.
Reporting Concerns and Staying Informed
North Wales Police is encouraging individuals who suspect someone is carrying or hiding a knife to report their concerns. Residents can reach out by calling 101 or can submit anonymous tips through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or the Fearless campaign website. In emergencies, individuals are advised to dial 999.
The community is invited to follow the developments of this campaign online using the hashtag #OpSceptre. The collective effort aims to enhance public safety and prevent knives from causing harm within communities.
Overall, Operation Sceptre serves as a vital step towards creating a safer environment in North Wales, fostering cooperation between law enforcement, retailers, and community members.
