Amorim Urges Manchester United to Mature After Fulham Draw

Manchester United’s winless start to the season continued as they drew 1-1 against Fulham at Craven Cottage on August 27, 2023. This result followed a disappointing 1-0 loss to Arsenal in their opening match, leaving the team with just one point from two games. Manager Ruben Amorim expressed his frustration, stating that his players need to “grow up” as a team.
United initially took the lead in the 58th minute with a deflected header from Leny Yoro. This came after Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty in the first half, a moment that weighed heavily on the team’s morale. However, Fulham equalized just 15 minutes later when substitute Emile Smith Rowe scored, leaving United to settle for another disappointing draw.
Amorim highlighted the need for his players to maintain focus and composure after taking the lead. “We scored the goal and then we forgot about how we play,” he said. “We have to grow up a lot as a team.” He pointed out that the moment they took the lead should have been one of celebration and momentum, but instead, the team struggled to secure their advantage.
The coach noted the psychological burden of missing key opportunities, particularly Fernandes’ penalty miss. “He has so much responsibility with him that I felt the lack of joy when he missed. Now we have to move forward no matter what happens,” Amorim stated.
Looking ahead, United faces a challenging fixture against League Two’s Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup on August 30, 2023. With their current form, the team is under pressure to deliver a positive result.
Amorim also addressed concerns regarding the performance of his summer signings, which cost the club a combined total of £200 million. High-profile players such as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko have yet to find the back of the net this season. Despite this, the coach remains optimistic about their potential, stating, “I think the feeling is there. The goals, we are going to score goals because we are creating so many chances.”
He acknowledged that adapting to the pace of the Premier League is a challenge for new players like Sesko. “It is really fast, and he is understanding that it is faster than the Bundesliga. We need to help him more sometimes,” Amorim added.
As Manchester United strives to turn their season around, Amorim’s emphasis on maturity and mental resilience will be crucial for the team in upcoming matches. The pressure is on to transform their promising moments into tangible results on the pitch.
