Billie Jean King Encourages Serena Williams to Consider Tennis Return
Speculation is mounting around the potential return of Serena Williams to professional tennis, despite her stepping away from the sport in 2022. Williams remains a central figure in tennis discussions, often regarded as one of the greatest players in history. Recent rumors suggest that she may contemplate a comeback in 2026, prompting discussions among fans and former players alike.
During an interview with Sky Sports, tennis legend Billie Jean King shared her thoughts on the possibility of Williams returning to the game. King expressed optimism about Williams’s desire to play again, even acknowledging the challenges she would face in competing at the highest level. “I think she wants to try to play again. But I also think she is very bright and intelligent, and she knows that she will not be number one again,” King noted.
King Remembers Early Days with the Williams Sisters
King recounted her first encounter with Williams and her sister, Venus Williams, when they were young children. “I met her when she was six and Venus was seven at a tennis clinic we gave in Long Beach, California. They came with their dad, Richard. It was an amazing day. I’ll never forget it,” King reflected. She highlighted the exceptional talent the sisters displayed even at a young age, stating, “You could see right away they’re exceptional.”
The conversation surrounding Williams’s potential return has gained momentum, particularly after Aryna Sabalenka commented on the matter. Sabalenka expressed that she believes there are players who could compete effectively against Williams should she decide to make a comeback.
Williams Responds to Comeback Speculation
While the speculation about her return has intensified, Williams has not publicly engaged in the conversation beyond her social media posts. Earlier this month, she addressed the rumors on X, stating, “Omg y’all I’m NOT coming back. This wildfire is crazy.” Despite her clear message, the chatter continued, prompting her to further clarify her stance with another post, saying, “Feeling strongly about claiming my mojo back.”
As the discussions continue, the tennis world remains captivated by the possibility of seeing Williams back on the court. Whether her comments indicate a genuine interest in returning remains to be seen, but the anticipation surrounding her potential comeback is palpable. With her storied career and unparalleled achievements, any decision Williams makes will undoubtedly have significant implications for the sport.
