Montenegro Airports Set to Welcome Record 3 Million Passengers

The Executive Director of Montenegro Airports, Roko Tolić, announced that 2023 is shaping up to be a historic year for the company, with expectations to surpass three million passengers for the first time. This surge is attributed to a record number of travelers, the introduction of new airline routes, and increased demands on infrastructure and staff.

During a recent press conference, Tolić shared insights into the airport’s performance, challenges, and strategic projects for the near future. He expressed optimism about the milestone, emphasizing its symbolic and operational significance for an airport system designed for much lower traffic volumes.

One of the highlights of his address was the announcement of a new route by British Airways to Tivat starting next season. Tolić described this development as a significant advancement for Montenegro’s air connectivity, reflecting international market leaders’ recognition of Montenegro’s coastal potential.

“British Airways has made it clear through negotiations that it recognizes Montenegro as a premium tourist destination,” Tolić stated. The airline will commence three weekly flights from May until the end of September, marking a prestigious addition to the region’s travel offerings.

Concerns about infrastructure were also addressed. Tolić noted that the current airport facilities in both Podgorica and Tivat were originally designed for much lower traffic volumes. He pointed out, “The figures we are achieving now far exceed what these airports were designed for,” underscoring the urgent need for terminal upgrades, capacity expansion, and modernization of equipment.

As part of this modernization effort, Tolić indicated interest in acquiring part of Vektra Aviation‘s property, which is currently on tender due to bankruptcy. The space includes over 3,000 square meters and could potentially be transformed into an additional terminal or a hangar for airlines like Wizz Air, which has announced plans to establish a base at Montenegro Airports.

“The need for additional capacity is pressing, especially as we prepare for the next season,” Tolić explained. The estimated cost for expanding airport capacities in both Podgorica and Tivat ranges from €250 million to €300 million. He emphasized the importance of creating a comprehensive master plan to guide development, a process typically handled by specialized firms.

Tolić also addressed the possibility of privatization. He stated that any concession should enhance operations and return facilities in better condition than before. “If we can adapt and expand efficiently, private capital can play a significant role in our growth,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Tolić emphasized that Podgorica Airport must operate 24/7 to meet growing demands, especially as Montenegro aspires to join the European Union. He remarked, “Podgorica deserves to be on the list of airports that operate around the clock. We are actively seeking additional staff to support this goal.”

As Montenegro prepares for a bustling travel season, the airport’s leadership is focused on ensuring that they meet the evolving needs of passengers and airlines alike, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for sustained growth and modernization in the future.
