Montenegro Handball Team Advances to Quarterfinals Amid Expectations
Montenegro’s women’s handball team has successfully secured a place in the quarterfinals of the World Championship, achieving what was widely anticipated due to their strong performance and favorable matchups. The team, known as the “Lions,” advanced with victories over favored opponents, including wins against the Faroe Islands (32:27), Paraguay (34:25), and Iceland (36:27). A standout moment came with a decisive win against Serbia (33:17), which marked a remarkable turnaround after suffering a heavy defeat to Germany (36:18).
The impressive victory over Serbia, described as a “rapsody” in the Balkan derby, highlighted the resilience of coach Suzana Lazović‘s squad. They demonstrated the grit of previous generations, bouncing back from their toughest loss to deliver a powerful performance. Despite this success, the team faced a formidable challenge in their quarterfinal match against Norway, a recognized powerhouse in women’s handball. Montenegro became the only team in the tournament that Norway did not defeat by a double-digit margin, ending the match at a score of 32:23.
Examining their performance, the number of technical errors was notably high, with the team committing 26 mistakes in the match against Norway. Tatjana Brnović, a key player and defensive pillar for Montenegro, reflected on the tournament, stating, “We are satisfied with how we finished the championship. I regret the large number of technical errors, but I hope we will learn from this experience.” She emphasized the potential for growth, noting that the team reached the top eight in the world rankings, mirroring their success at last year’s European Championship.
While Montenegro maintained control in matches where they were favorites, they struggled in three other encounters, including losses to Spain (31:26) and the previously mentioned defeats against Germany and Norway. These games require thorough analysis by Lazović and her coaching staff, as they seek to understand the gap between Montenegro and stronger teams like Germany and Spain, who have a significant advantage in player numbers and resources.
The disparity in registered players is stark. Montenegro boasts only 893 registered female handball players, compared to more than 24,000 in Hungary and around 300,000 in Germany. Nevertheless, Montenegro has historically performed well against Germany, winning four out of seven encounters, including a gold medal at the 2012 European Championship.
As Montenegro prepares for the next major tournaments, including the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, the focus must be on enhancing their gameplay. The team needs to adopt a faster, more diverse style of play, incorporating more counterattacks and relying less on a defensive strategy. The evolution of handball necessitates that Montenegro moves beyond previous successes based on a strong defense.
While there is recognition of the challenges posed by limited player numbers, it is crucial to ensure that the national team fields its strongest lineup at major events. The Montenegro Handball Federation has emphasized the importance of this, especially highlighted by the number of registered players in competing nations.
For Montenegro, a country often viewed as a sports phenomenon, relying on its small population as an excuse for performance shortcomings is counterproductive. The journey to the 2028 Olympics presents both a challenge and an opportunity for growth. The current World Championship result is not just a milestone but a learning chapter for the team, as they strive to enhance their competitive edge on the global stage.
