Montenegro to Host Major EU-Western Balkans Summit in 2026
Montenegro will host a significant diplomatic event when the European Union and Western Balkans Summit takes place on June 1, 2026. This historic summit, organized by President Jakov Milatović, is expected to unite leaders from EU member states in Montenegro, marking it as one of Europe’s most prominent diplomatic occasions of the year.
The decision to hold the summit in Montenegro serves as a strong political message and acknowledges the progress made by the citizens of Montenegro on their path toward European integration. According to Milatović’s office, this event confirms that the Western Balkans has a place in Europe’s future and that Montenegro is a credible partner committed to regional stability and development.
In the latest report from the European Commission, it has been officially confirmed that Montenegro could become a member of the European Union by 2028. Milatović emphasized that the country’s strategic goal is to build a modern, strong European state that prioritizes the interests of all its citizens. He stated, “The objectives facing our institutions must be achieved, with a focus on implementing reforms and actions that build a modern society with a robust economy.”
The organization of the summit also carries symbolic significance. It coincides with the 20th anniversary of Montenegro’s independence, positioning the country as a central player in discussions about future EU expansion, new investment plans, and the integration of the region into a unified European market. Milatović expressed that this event will serve as a moment for Montenegro to receive definitive confirmation of its aim to become a full member of the EU by 2028, further strengthening political, economic, and security ties with EU member states.
The upcoming EU-Western Balkans Summit represents an opportunity to showcase Montenegro’s achievements and enter the final phase of the accession process. The arrival of European leaders in Montenegro will send a message of confidence in the country’s stability, institutions, and the effectiveness of their ongoing efforts. As Milatović remarked, “Our obligation is to finish the job – to work every day towards building a modern society and a strong economy.”
This summit promises to be a crucial stepping stone for Montenegro and the wider Western Balkans region as they aim for deeper integration into the European Union.
