Mystics Trade Aaliyah Edwards to Sun for Jacy Sheldon and Draft Swap
The Washington Mystics have traded Aaliyah Edwards to the Connecticut Sun in a significant deal announced on Thursday. In return, the Mystics receive Jacy Sheldon and the right for a first-round pick swap in the 2026 WNBA Draft. This trade is part of Washington’s strategy as they navigate a rebuilding phase.
The Mystics now have the option to retain their first-round pick from the Minnesota Lynx, who lead the league, or swap it for Connecticut’s first-round pick, which was acquired from the New York Liberty, currently second in the standings. This flexibility reflects the Mystics’ aim to strengthen their future roster.
Strategic Moves by the Mystics
This trade comes just ahead of the WNBA’s trade deadline set for 3 p.m. ET on Thursday. Earlier this week, the Mystics also traded Brittney Sykes for Alysha Clark and Seattle’s 2026 first-round pick, showcasing their commitment to reshaping the team.
Edwards, who stands at 6 feet 3 inches, was drafted sixth overall in 2024 after an impressive collegiate career at UConn. During her time with the Mystics, she averaged 7.0 points and 4.7 rebounds in just under 19 minutes per game. Despite a promising start, her playing time decreased this season due to competition in Washington’s frontcourt, which includes young talents like Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin, as well as veteran Stefanie Dolson.
Connecticut’s Ambitious Vision
The Sun’s general manager, Morgan Tuck, expressed enthusiasm about acquiring Edwards, stating, “Bringing Aaliyah to the Connecticut Sun is more than just a roster move; it’s a statement about where we’re headed as a franchise.” Tuck emphasized that Edwards embodies the mindset and drive necessary to foster a championship culture within the team.
Edwards will be the 19th former UConn player to join the Sun since the franchise relocated to Connecticut in 2003, according to ESPN Research. As the team looks to build a competitive roster, Tuck highlighted Edwards’ leadership qualities and competitive spirit as key assets for the Sun’s future.
In contrast, Sheldon, a 5-foot-10 guard, was selected fifth overall by the Dallas Wings in 2024 before being traded to the Sun earlier this offseason. Throughout her career, she has averaged 6.3 points and 2.3 assists per game. The Mystics’ general manager, Jamila Wideman, expressed excitement about welcoming Sheldon, noting that her skill set and work ethic align well with the team’s needs.
The Mystics’ recent trades reflect a determined effort to reconfigure their roster while preparing for future seasons. As the WNBA season progresses, both teams look to capitalize on their new acquisitions and strengthen their chances for success.
