Steaua Bucharest Eyes £12 Million Europa League Prize Against Aberdeen
Steaua Bucharest’s president, Gica Becali, is eagerly anticipating the financial rewards of a successful Europa League campaign, with a potential bonus of £12 million at stake. His team will face Aberdeen in the first leg of their play-off round at Pittodrie on August 17, 2023, before hosting the return leg a week later. The Romanian side is approaching the tie with confidence, fueled by strong performances from key players.
Confidence within the Steaua camp is palpable, especially from star players Dennis Politic and David Miculescu, who have both expressed their belief in a straightforward victory over the Scottish club. Politic stated, “I think we will be able to enter the Europa League group stages without any problems,” emphasizing that they view Aberdeen as a team that, while respectable, is ultimately “very beatable.”
Becali, known for his controversial past and eccentric behavior, made headlines with his dismissive comments about Aberdeen’s capabilities. He claimed, “I am not interested in Aberdeen or how they play,” and expressed confidence that Steaua would succeed where other Romanian teams, such as CFR Cluj and Universitatea Craiova, might struggle, as they would be competing in the revamped Conference League if they fail to advance.
The stakes are high for both clubs, with Steaua Bucharest eager to secure a position in the Europa League group stage. Becali has already earmarked the financial boost that success would bring, stating, “I know we will get at least £12 million when we qualify.” His focus on the monetary implications underscores the importance of this match for the club’s financial future.
Amid the optimism, the Romanian side will face a challenge as they will be without veteran defender Risto Radunovic, who is sidelined until October due to a groin injury. His absence could impact the team’s defensive strategy, but the remaining squad appears ready to step up.
Miculescu echoed his teammate’s sentiments, stating, “There’s no doubt we are aiming to win both matches at home and away in the play-offs.” He acknowledged Aberdeen’s recent performance against Celtic but maintained that if Steaua executes their game plan effectively, they should prevail.
As the first leg approaches, the pressure mounts for both teams, with the outcome likely to have significant implications not just for their standings in European competition, but also for their respective financial health. The match at Pittodrie promises to be a crucial encounter, with both squads keen to secure a vital advantage in this knockout stage of the Europa League qualifying round.
