American Traveler Discovers Hidden Charms in Jaywick, UK

A recent visit to the coastal town of Jaywick, often labeled as the most deprived area in the United Kingdom, has unveiled a different perspective, thanks to American traveler Drew Binsky. Known for his journeys to every country on Earth, Binsky found beauty and resilience in this Essex village, challenging the common narrative surrounding its impoverished reputation.
Jaywick has been in the spotlight for its socioeconomic struggles. A report by a United Nations expert in 2018 highlighted the UK’s extreme poverty, and even Donald Trump used images of the town’s dilapidated areas during a campaign to illustrate poverty. Yet, Binsky’s experience paints a more nuanced picture.
“It’s amazing – it’s one of the only sandy beaches in the whole country,” Binsky remarked while overlooking Jaywick’s shoreline. While this may seem a stretch given the picturesque coastlines of Devon and Cornwall, it signals a shift in how the town is perceived. He expressed excitement about exploring the beach and noted, “Even in the off-season, there’s something raw and real about an empty shoreline.”
Binsky’s encounter with Jaywick’s community left a lasting impression. He was guided around the town by local resident Danny Sloggett, who showcased the unwavering spirit of those living in the area despite facing numerous challenges, including natural disasters and drug issues. Sloggett, a proud resident since 1986, highlighted the affordability of housing, stating, “They say Jaywick’s very deprived, but I think it’s very good because the houses are cheap. There’s people in London paying half a million pounds for a house – in Jaywick, we pay £50,000.”
Despite the low housing prices, many homes remain in poor condition, often constructed from asbestos sheeting and suffering from mold. Originally developed as a holiday village in the 1920s, Jaywick saw many of its vacation properties turned into permanent residences after the Second World War due to a housing crisis. Local resident Joanne Smallman shared the stark reality of living conditions, indicating that survival can be difficult during winter months. “If we don’t get out in the next couple of weeks, we won’t survive another winter,” she told Channel 4 News.
Sloggett remains optimistic about the town’s image, asserting, “All I want is the world to know that Jaywick is a very nice place to live, with a beautiful community, and it’s not as bad as some people say.” He recounted the irony that people visit Jaywick for holidays, questioning how a place can be deemed deprived if it draws visitors.
Binsky echoed this sentiment, stating, “You know, everybody talks s*** about Jaywick. I came here to try to see what it’s really like, and I’m finding an amazing community.” The local residents display a strong sense of camaraderie, often choosing to support one another rather than relying on external authorities. Sloggett pointed out, “When we have problems in Jaywick, we don’t phone the police. We phone each other and things are taken care of.”
Sloggett’s own past includes challenges with the law, having served multiple sentences for minor offenses. Yet, he has transformed into a community advocate, aiming to reshape Jaywick’s negative image. Binsky left with a deeper understanding of the town, stating, “After spending time here, I see there’s more to the story.”
The resilience and pride of Jaywick’s residents shine through despite the difficult circumstances they face. From the enthusiasm shown by Sloggett to the unexpected charms of the town, Binsky concluded, “It might be England’s most neglected town. But to be honest, I kind of love it.”
This visit not only highlights the complex realities of Jaywick but also emphasizes the importance of looking beyond statistics to appreciate the human spirit within communities often misunderstood.
