Britain’s Dirtiest Beaches Named: A Warning for Summer Visitors

Families planning beach trips this summer should be aware of the UK’s most littered beaches, as highlighted by a recent report from waste management experts at BusinessWaste.co.uk. As holidays approach, this information serves as a crucial reminder for those seeking a clean and enjoyable seaside experience.
According to the report, Skegness Beach in Lincolnshire tops the list of the most polluted beaches, followed closely by Margate Main Sands and Formby Beach in Merseyside. The assessment utilized reviews from TripAdvisor to determine the extent of litter and unsightly conditions reported by beachgoers.
At Skegness, reviews paint a grim picture. One visitor, commenting in June 2025, noted the presence of “dog waste” and “human waste” in the grass dunes, while another lamented the sight of “trash, dirty nappies, and broken glass” littering the area. Despite these complaints, Skegness remains a popular destination, with some visitors praising its traditional seaside charm and attractions. A May 2025 review highlighted the beach’s “immaculate golden sands” and the availability of local food and drinks, including highly rated fish and chips from the Blue Fin Fish Bar.
Similar issues plague Margate Main Sands, where reviews mention dog waste and broken glass among the litter. Visitors have expressed frustration over the conditions, which detract from the beach’s appeal. Many echoed concerns about cleanliness, emphasizing the need for better maintenance and waste management.
Despite a generally positive reputation, Formby Beach has also faced criticism. While some visitors appreciate its natural beauty, several reviews noted litter strewn across the sands. A common complaint involved overcrowding, with one visitor recalling arriving at the beach by 10:30 a.m. to find it already packed with people and debris.
The situation is not limited to these three beaches. Porthluney Beach in Cornwall received a “Brown Flag” designation last year for being among the dirtiest beaches in the UK. Analyses of summer water quality data by UK travel site Holiday Park Guru indicated that Porthluney harbors significant bacterial contamination, primarily from sewage and waste. This beach was one of 13 identified as having “poor” ratings from the Environment Agency.
Visitor experiences at Porthluney Beach have included frustrations over parking. A review from September 2023 described a visitor receiving a £100 parking fine despite paying for parking, which has discouraged future visits. The reviewer stated, “Not going back to this car park or beach again after reading so many reviews about parking fines.”
With summer approaching, families are advised to consider these findings when planning beach outings. As these popular destinations grapple with litter and cleanliness issues, it is crucial to remain informed and choose locations that prioritize visitor experience and environmental care.
