Family Sentenced for Cruel Treatment of Dogs in Cramped Cages

A family from Poulton-le-Fylde has received significant legal repercussions for the prolonged mistreatment of dogs kept in deplorable conditions. Michelle Wilding, 58, along with her sons, Christopher, 40, and Jack, 29, were found guilty of failing to provide adequate care for the animals, which were discovered in cramped cages without food or water. The trio has been banned from owning animals for a combined total of 40 years.
RSPCA inspectors discovered the dogs confined in small, urine-soaked cages stacked on top of one another. The stench of ammonia was so potent that it caused discomfort to the officers on site. Many of the canines were left without basic necessities for as long as 18 hours a day, enduring harsh temperatures as low as 3°C.
During the investigation, the RSPCA found various breeds, including French bulldogs, living in squalid conditions. These animals had no access to food, water, or bedding, and some were kept in spaces so small they could not stand up or turn around. Inspectors noted that the environment around the cages was unsanitary, with rubbish bags filled with dog excrement piled nearby.
The court heard that Michelle and Christopher Wilding admitted to failing to meet the needs of the dogs. Michelle Wilding specifically faced additional charges related to causing unnecessary suffering to two dogs, Diesel and Missy, by neglecting their medical treatment for conditions that included ulcerated growths and infections. Christopher Wilding similarly pleaded guilty to neglecting a pocket bully named Dala, as well as another dog named Havana, both of whom required veterinary care.
Legal Consequences and Court Proceedings
On July 22, 2023, at Lancaster Magistrates Court, both Michelle and Christopher Wilding received suspended sentences of 27 weeks and were banned from keeping animals for 15 years. They were also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187. Jack Wilding was banned from owning animals for ten years and fined £270, alongside a £108 victim surcharge.
The RSPCA first visited the Wilding residence in January 2021, following initial complaints. Inspectors advised Michelle Wilding on the inadequacies of the dogs’ living conditions but found that necessary improvements were not made. During a return visit, Christopher Wilding admitted that the dogs were confined to small cages for extended periods, highlighting a disregard for their well-being.
Reports indicated that many dogs displayed signs of severe distress, such as spinning and chewing at their cages. Some were too weak to walk, and several were found with untreated health issues. A veterinarian’s assessment revealed that twelve dogs were in poor physical condition, and there were significant dental health issues attributed to their inadequate diet.
RSPCA Inspector Will Lamping expressed relief at the outcome of the case, stating, “These dogs were kept in conditions which no animal should suffer. They were confined in tight spaces surrounded by dirt and denied food, water, and medical aid.” As the animals were rescued, they will now receive proper care and, when possible, will be rehomed.
The case highlights the importance of animal welfare and the need for responsible pet ownership. The RSPCA continues to advocate against such cruelty, reinforcing that neglect and mistreatment will not be tolerated.
