The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially designated all correctional centres in the country as “Red Zones” in anticipation of planned protests advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. These protests are scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, and the NCoS is urging the public to avoid these areas to ensure safety and security.

Umar Abubakar, the spokesman for the NCoS, issued a statement on Sunday, emphasizing that correctional facilities are restricted areas. He stated, “The public is hereby informed that all correctional centres are declared as Red Zones. Anyone who has no official business in these areas should stay clear to avoid any untoward incidents or security breaches.”

The NCoS’s warning highlights the potential risks associated with the demonstrations, which are expected to draw significant attention due to Kanu’s high-profile status. Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for the independence of the southeastern region of Nigeria. His detention has sparked widespread protests and calls for his release, making this upcoming demonstration particularly sensitive.

In addition to the warning about restricted areas, Abubakar encouraged citizens to cooperate with security agencies. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment during the protests. “It is crucial for everyone to respect restricted areas such as correctional facilities,” he added.

The NCoS aims to prevent any escalation of tensions during the protests, which could lead to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. The declaration of correctional centres as Red Zones serves as a precautionary measure to safeguard both the facilities and the general public.

As the date approaches, the NCoS and various security agencies will likely intensify their preparations to manage the anticipated protests. The response from the public and the effectiveness of these measures will be closely monitored as the situation unfolds.
